Pre-Registration Trainee Pharmacy Technician - Apprentice

Job summary

An apprentice opportunity has arisen for a highly motivated individual to train and become a qualified Pharmacy Technician; registered with the General Pharmaceutical Council.

As part of our 2024-2026 cohort of Pre-registration Trainee Pharmacy Technicians, you will participate in our two year training programme involving 'on the job' training, whilst working towards the Certificate of Higher Education in Pharmacy Technician Practice Apprenticeship with the University of East Anglia. On completion of the programme you can register as a General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC) registered Pharmacy Technician.

We are looking for enthusiastic, self-motivated individuals with an interest in healthcare and science to learn the skills and knowledge required of a pharmacy professional.

Main duties of the job

A minimum of 4 GCSEs grade A* - C (new grades 9 - 4) or equivalent including:

  • GCSE English at Grade C/Level 4 or above, Scottish National 5 or above, or equivalent English language evidence which can include Functional Skills Level 2*
  • GCSE Maths at Grade C/Level 4, Scottish National 5 or above, or equivalent evidence of numeracy which can include Functional Skills Level 2
  • GCSE Science x 1 at Grade C/Level 4 or above, or Scottish National 5 or equivalent

*PLEASE NOTE that English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) is not an equivalent to GCSE English Grade C/Level 4 or above and does not meet the entry requirements.

You will also need to be patient focused, have good interpersonal and communication skills, be a quick learner and be committed to the 2 year training programme. The ability to cope with the discipline of studying whilst working is essential.

A comprehensive training programme will be delivered to level 4 standards by attendance at a recognised college of further education or pharmacy training organisation providing the knowledge component of the Principles and Practice for Pharmacy Technicians and supported by further skill-based training in each rotational area.

To undertake roles and responsibilities defined by the GPhC as part of the Pre-registration trainee Pharmacy Technician training in order to register as a Pharmacy Technician. The qualification will be a combination of study and demonstrating competence within the workplace.

An ability to cope with the discipline of studying whilst working as part of a team throughout a busy department is essential; therefore, a professional approach is vital. Participate in each rotation in accordance with a structured training programme and complete competencies for each section as defined.

There will be a designated Educational Supervisor and a structured package of training for each rotation. Rotations include:

  • Inpatients dispensary.
  • Clozapine co-ordination.
  • Medicines Management.
  • Procurement and distribution.
  • Specialist clinical experience.
  • Community Mental Health Team visits.
  • Whittington health NHS Foundation Trust.
