Job summary

The North London Partners Specialist Perinatal Mental Health Service is a community mental health service for pregnant and postnatal women with severe and complex mental illness. The aim of the team is to detect, prevent and treat perinatal mental health problems to improve the experience of pregnancy and the two years postpartum for women and their families. Camden & Islington Mental Health Foundation Trust jointly with Barnet, Enfield & Haringey Mental Health Trust have developed perinatal mental health services across five boroughs in the North Central London area. The service has been running since 2017 and provides specialist perinatal mental health services across the boroughs of Camden, Islington, Barnet, Enfield and Haringey.

-West team (Barnet) based at N12 0DZ

-East team (Enfield & Haringey) based at N9 7HD &

-South team (Camden & Islington) based at NW1 0PE

The NLP SPMHS consist of full MDTs; consultant psychiatrists, clinical psychologists, nurses, occupational therapist, social worker, family therapist, nursery nurses, peer support workers and pharmacist. MDT sub-teams staff work closely with maternity sites in North Central London; Barnet Hospital, Royal Free Hospital, North Middlesex University Hospital, University College Hospital and Whittington Hospital. Clinics normally run at team bases, maternity sites, children's centres and community centres across the boroughs as well as home visits. Some clinical work is additionally carried out via video call.

Main duties of the job

Services offered by the post holder will include providing family assessment and interventions in line with the evidence base and NICE guidelines and offering advice and consultation on family and systems work to referrers, staff of the North London Partners Specialist Perinatal Mental Health Service and other professional and non-professional groups. The post holder will actively contribute to the planning, development and evaluation of perinatal mental health clinical services using leadership and knowledge to provide training and consultancy in Systemic Family Therapy within the specialty area of perinatal mental health and be involved in service audit and research relevant to family work within perinatal mental health. They are expected to hold a complex caseload.

  • Professional qualification in social work, psychiatry, clinical or counselling psychology, nursing (mental health nursing and other nursing specialities which require a counselling role), occupational therapy, speech / language therapy or counselling, that meet AFT Training in Family Therapy Entry Requirements
  • Further AFT-accredited qualification in family therapy / systemic psychotherapy, or an equivalent meeting the UKCP criteria for 'grandparent' and 'APEL' qualification as systemic psychotherapist
  • Current membership / registration with UKCP as systemic family therapist / psychotherapist
  • Experience of working with a wide variety of client groups, across the whole life course and presenting problems that reflect the full range of clinical severity.
  • Significant post-qualification family work experience
