Job summary

We are looking for an enthusiastic and experienced Band 6 Occupational Therapist to join our Hospital Division Occupational and Arts Therapies team, based at Highgate Mental Health Centre and St Pancras Hospital. This role is based on our female PICU, Ruby ward, which recently moved to a refurbished ward at Highgate and has identified therapeutic spaces forassessment and intervention, including an ADL kitchen and calm room.Ruby ward team have a focus on reducing violence and aggression, they are currently undertaking a Quality improvement project which using activity and engagement as a strategy for this. There is a newly developed PICU Team, consisting of male and female wards working closely to provide specialist care and skill development of staff. Occupational Therapy is an integral part of the ward team and is highly valued, with OTsregularly attending NAPICU conference with the MDT. There are exciting developments in progress, including the opportunity to be involved in trialling use of the Vona du Toit Model of Creative Ability (VdTMoCA) for Occupational Therapy assessment and intervention within PICU.

The post holder will have proven clinical skills to manage a complex caseload on the female PICU. Along with the MDT they will work to recovery principles with a community focus to support robust move-on plans. There will be responsibility for supervision of junior OTs andactivity workers and some deputising for the Band 7 clinical leads.

Main duties of the job

The post-holder will ensure that their practice meets the requirements of this clinical group, and assess the needs of service users with complex mental and physical health needs. This includes falls risk minimisation work and the issuing and provision of equipment, aids and minor adaptations.

The post-holder will ensure that their practice is in keeping with current evidence based practices, in accordance with the Royal College of Occupational Therapy Code of Ethics., and will work with OTs, Arts Therapists and activity workers to provide a comprehensive treatment programme for service users.

The post holder is expected to establish and maintain positive interpersonal relationships with other staff members characterised by trust, mutual respect, and open, honest communication.

The post-holder will have supervisory responsibility for junior staff, including a Band 5 OT and Band 3 ward Activity Worker, and student practitioners working in the unit. They will receive supervision and mentoring from a Band 7 Clinical Lead OT.

Although staff are allocated initially to work in one specific ward, all appointments are made to the Hospital Division, and there will be opportunity for further skill development within the Inpatient wards. The Hospital Division comprises of inpatient wards for working age adults who require acute treatment or rehabilitation and wards which specialise in the care of older adults.
