Job responsibilities

• Assist with diagnosis, medication reviews, management plans, risk assessments, crisis plans and self-help plans for patients with complex mental health problems.
• Work with Personality Disorder service to develop a collaborative care model for patients with disorders falling within the remit of the team.
• Provide clinical assessments of patients as necessary.
• Provide follow up as necessary for clients within teams.
• Support MDT in their diagnosis, management and treatment of patients through case discussions, joint consultations supervision and bespoke training.
• Play a key role in implementing improved linkage between core community and intensive teams within the Long Term Plan model.
• Provide Consultant input and clinical leadership to Personality Disorder service and sub teams.
• Provide Consultant input to triage system for referrals into Personality Disorder service.
• Maintain effective communication with GPs, patients and their carers.
• To provide clinical input to multi-disciplinary case conferencing around complex patients.
• Provide clinical assessments and supervision to trainees.
• To engage with local service user and carer groups.
• To provide clinical and professional leadership and to participate in management activities and governance processes related to the post or the wider service in which it is embedded.
• To play an integral role in the performance of the team, the further development of the service, and the development of clinical pathways and priorities of the service line.
• To work within the MDT promoting respect for all professional groups and focusing upon coherent and integrated teamwork.
• Other management/clinical supporting activity (to be negotiated as required by the Trust.)

• To provide consultant liaison input to the Camden Core Team(s)
• To offer personality disorder expertise in case consultations for clients under the care of Camden core teams.
• To advise and make treatment recommendations to Camden Core Team clinicians regarding patients with (suspected) personality disorder / complex emotional needs
• To offer joint assessments with Camden Core Team clinicians inselectedcases of patients with (suspected) personality disorder / complex emotional needs
• To discuss appropriateness of referrals to the Personality Disorders Service with Camden Core Team clinicians
• To offer bespoke training on personality disorder / complex emotional needs to the Camden Core Team(s), primary care clinicians, or other service providers linked with the Core Team or embedded in primary care (social prescribers, third-sector organisations etc.). Where appropriate to co-create and jointly deliver training with Core Team members.
• To contribute in reviewing and developing service pathways for patients with complex emotional needs in the new core team offer
• To selectively participate in other quality improvement, service development, and research activity in the Core Team(s)/primary care e.g. Time to Think project, relational prescribing project.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

• Full registration with the General Medical Council (GMC) and a license to practice. Must be on the specialist register or within 3 months of gaining a Certificate of Completion of Training
• Section 12(2) and Approved Clinician status (or eligibility) - qualifies to act as a Responsible Clinician
• Membership of Royal College of Psychiatrists or equivalent higher qualification in psychiatry
• Registered with Royal College of Psychiatrists CPD programme and in good standing

Desirable

• Other relevant post-graduate qualification
• Trained as an Educational Supervisor for doctors in training
• Training as a Consultant mentor

Skills & Abilities

Essential

• Ability to be flexible and adaptable to change.
• Ability to effectively communicate ideas and influence others.
• Good knowledge of and ability to use both spoken and written English
• Ability to organise workload and manage time and delegate responsibility where appropriate
• Ability to practise as an independent Consultant Psychiatrist.
• Sensitivity to needs of all patients and carers.
• Sensitivity and awareness in clients and staff from different cultures, ethnicities, gender and sexual orientations.

Desirable

• A special interest or willingness to develop one in an area which helps to meet the needs of the Trust
• Experience in successfully delivering research projects

Knowledge & Experience

Essential

• Knowledge and observance of the requirements and duties of a doctor laid down by the GMC in Good Medical Practice.
• Clinical knowledge of the full range mental disorders. Experience in the assessment of complex clinical cases involving severe and enduring mental illness and significant risk histories and the ability to assertively engage and manage such cases
• Experience in the assessment of complex clinical cases involving severe and enduring mental illness, specifically those with personality disorders and complex emotional needs and significant risk histories and the ability to assertively engage and manage such cases
• Expertise in a comprehensive range of evidence based interventions including structured clinical management, psychological therapies and pharmacological treatments
• Knowledge of the Mental Health Act, Mental Capacity Act and safeguarding practices
• Experience of community psychiatry and interest and experience of working with individuals with severe personality difficulties/disorders
• Experience in work place based assessments of doctors in training
• Knowledge of clinical commissioning and external organisations that interface with an NHS Trust
• Experience in organising and chairing meetings
• Good understanding of Trust governance structures, especially clinical governance

Desirable

• Experience in teaching small and large groups
• Experience in developing policies and protocols.
• Experience of service development.
