Job summary

The post offered is a consultant position in old age psychiatry split between Pearl Ward based at the Highgate Mental Health Centre (5PAs) and an additional 1PA to take on the lead role for ECT across the Trust, and one day a week (2Pas) working in the Whittington liaison service on the adjacent site

Pearl ward is a 14 bedded ward primarily for older adults with functional mental illness.

The role of the Consultant is to be the clinical lead of the team and to ensure high, quality, patient-centred, effective, safe and efficient care is delivered by the team

Main duties of the job

The post-holder will provide clinical leadership to Pearl ward and ECT and one day a week into the Whittington liaison service.

Pearl ward is a 14 bedded ward for older adults with a primary diagnosis of a functional mental illness. The post-holder is expected to review patients together with the MDT on the ward on a regular basis. They will act as the Responsible Clinician for patients on Pearl ward who are detained under the Mental Health Act. They will also be expected to provide clinical supervision to the trainee doctors working on the ward.

The ward is managed by a full-time ward manager and 2 full-time charge nurses. There is a full time OT and activities co-ordinator that are shared between Pearl and Garnet (our other Older Adult ward) and also input from a psychologist

The ward is based on the ground floor of our in-patient unit at Highgate Mental Health Centre with access to an award-winning garden that is used exclusively by Pearl and Garnet ward. A new hospital is currently being built on Dartmouth Park Hill, within the grounds of the Whittington Hospital) and the wards will be transferring to a new dementia friendly unit once this is completed. The current mean length of stay on Pearl ward is 74 days which contrasts with 48 days on the general adult wards.

The post holder will be expected to hold up to date Section 12 approval and Approved Clinician status. As part of their duties they may be expected to participate in the Trust-wide office hours Section 12 rota. They will have 4-5 duty days a year when they will clear their diary in advance and be available to do Mental Health Act assessments. If they are not called for assessments, they can use the time for administration

The post-holder will hold formal Clinical Supervisor responsibility for one core trainee and one foundation trainee and will be expected to provide day to day informal clinical supervision of the higher trainee doctor allocated to the team. All consultants are also expected to participate in medical student teaching. They will keep their trainer accreditation up to date.

The post holder will be in the C&I designated body, unless they meet the criteria for another designated body. The Responsible Officer is Dr Vincent Kirchner. The post holder will have an appraisal meeting annually. They will use the L2P electronic Revalidation System (software program) for their appraisal. It is their responsibility to ensure they have uploaded their supporting evidence and submitted it to the appraiser at least three weeks before their appraisal meeting. If they work elsewhere in a role that requires a license to practice, then information about this role must be included in their portfolio, including from the Medical Director of that Organisation, about their fitness to practice. They will be allocated an appraiser. They will be expected to arrange colleague and patient feedback when prompted this is built into L2P. After they have had their appraisal meeting they will be given the opportunity to provide feedback on their experience of appraisal.   • Full registration with the General Medical Council (GMC) and a license to practice. Must be on the specialist register or within 3 months of gaining a Certificate of Completion of Training
  • Section 12(2) and Approved Clinician status (or eligibility) - qualifies to act as a Responsible Clinician
  • Membership of Royal College of Psychiatrists or equivalent higher qualification in psychiatry
  • Registered with Royal College of Psychiatrists CPD programme and in good standing

Desirable

  • Other relevant post-graduate qualification
  • Trained as an Educational Supervisor for doctors in training
