Job summary

Band 8a Clinical or Counselling Psychologist in the Islington Survivors Trauma Service (ISTS)

As we continue to expand and develop our service, we have the opportunity to advertise this exciting new role. We are looking for a highly motivated and compassionate individual to join our unique service, to provide high quality psychological support to clients as well as taking a lead in developing and undertaking appropriate research. We are a small team of clinical and counselling psychologists who offer psychological assessment and therapy to adult survivors of institutionalised abuse experienced whilst under the care of Islington Council as children. These are clients with complex needs and we support them to engage with the ISTS and/or other services as needed. We come under the umbrella of the wider Traumatic Stress Clinic and have access to specialist supervision groups and CPD opportunities. We work closely with the Non-Recent Abuse Team in Islington Council and with the Islington Survivors Network.

This is a fixed-term 0.6 WTE position until March 2025. Ideally this will include Mondays to attend team meetings. The clinic is based at St Pancras Hospital, but the role an be a hybrid of clinic and home working.

We are especially keen to recruit a psychologist from the BAME community to ensure that we continue to meet the needs of those who grew up in the borough of Islington.

Main duties of the job

To work as part of a small service providing dedicated psychological support for those affected by the widespread abuse that occurred in the Islington's children's homes and associated institutions between 1960 and 1995. This includes providing psychological assessment and either signposting survivors to appropriate services or providing specialist trauma-focused psychological treatment for those people presenting with complex-PTSD or other mental health impacts of their trauma. To take a lead on developing and conducting research appropriate to the service.

About us

The ISTS is a small team of clinical and counselling psychologists who offer psychological assessment and therapy to adult survivors of institutionalised abuse experienced whilst under the care of Islington Council as children. The team is embedded in the wider Traumatic Stress Clinic, a specialist service for the treatment of complex PTSD. We have access to specialist EMDR and CBT/CFT supervision groups, a monthly reflective practice group and other CPD opportunities. We work closely with the Non-Recent Abuse Team in Islington Council and with the Islington Survivors Network. We are a dynamic team with a passion for working in the field of trauma and addressing the impact of abuse.

Job responsibilities

3.1 Clinical

3.1.1 To support survivors to engage with the ISTS from their first contact with the service, with the understanding that their experiences of institutionalised abuse make it more difficult to engage with health and social care systems as adults.

3.1.2 To provide psychological assessments of referred clients, using interview, formal psychometric and other assessment methods as appropriate.

3.1.3 To formulate and devise psychological treatment and management plans for referred clients with a high-level of severity and complexity, including those who struggle to engage, and to provide psychological treatment for such clients, using a range of psychological interventions appropriate to the service.

3.1.4 To provide psychological advice, guidance and consultation to other professionals, to assist in the formulation, diagnosis and treatment of clients.

3.1.5 To provide reports and communicate in a skilled and sensitive manner concerning the assessment, formulation and treatment plans of clients.

To liaise with other health and social care staff, from a range of agencies, and survivor support networks in the care provided to clients, where appropriate.

To access individual clinical supervision, as well as the supervision groups available through the wider Traumatic Stress Clinic

3.2 Research, audit and service evaluation

3.2.1 To utilise evidence-based literature and research to support evidence-based practice in individual work and work with other team members.

3.2.2 To take a lead in developing research projects and undertaking appropriate research in the ISTS, and provide research advice to other staff undertaking research.

3.2.3 To participate in and contribute to clinical audit and service evaluation with colleagues within the service, to help evaluate and improve service provision, proposing changes to working practice and procedures for own work area as required.

3.3 Teaching, training, and supervision

3.3.1 To provide professional and clinical supervision, where required, of qualified clinical or counselling psychologists, trainee psychologists and assistant psychologists.

3.3.2 To provide advice, consultation, training and supervision, where appropriate, to other health and social care staff working with the client group.
