CONSULTANT PSYCHIATRIST - 10PAs Older Adult In-patients and Whittington Liaison

Please come and join our multidisciplinary teams at Garnet Ward and Whittington Liaison Team. The post offered is a consultant position in old age psychiatry split between Garnet Ward based at the Highgate Mental Health Centre, 7Pas, and an additional 3PA working in the Whittington liaison service.

The role of the Consultant is to be the clinical lead of the team and to ensure high, quality, patient-centered, effective, safe and efficient care is delivered by the team.

Main duties of the job

The Highgate unit is based at Dartmouth Park Hill, London N19 5NX.

Garnet ward is a 14 bedded ward for older adults with a primary diagnosis of organic mental disorder, mainly dementia. You will be joining an experienced multidisciplinary team able to manage a range of presentations from acute deterioration in functional illness to end of life care in dementia.

The Whittington Hospital is located next to Archway underground station. It provides acute services to over 500,000 people living in Islington and Haringey as well as other surrounding London boroughs including Barnet, Enfield, Camden and Hackney. The hospital provides a range of services including urgent and emergency services, surgery, critical care, maternity, and gynaecology, children and young persons services, medical care, outpatients department (OPD) and end of life care. The Whittington Hospital has 346 inpatient beds. In 2018/19 the hospital reported 21,292 day care admissions, 18,256 emergency admissions and 2,224 elective inpatient admissions.

The post-Holder will participate in a daily Team supervision/clinical de-briefing session for overnight On-call Core trainees (when handing over clinical responsibility to the teams medical team).

Qualifications

Essential

  • Full registration with the General Medical Council (GMC) and a license to practice. Must be on the specialist register or within 3 months of gaining a Certificate of Completion of Training
  • Section 12(2) and Approved Clinician status (or eligibility) - qualifies to act as a Responsible Clinician
  • Membership of Royal College of Psychiatrists or equivalent higher qualification in psychiatry
  • Registered with Royal College of Psychiatrists CPD programme and in good standing
  • Shared Services training up to date to be an approved trainer/clinical supervisor

Desirable

  • Other relevant post-graduate qualification
  • Trained as an Educational Supervisor for doctors in training
  • Training as a Consultant mentor

Knowledge & Experience

Essential

  • Knowledge and observance of the requirements and duties of a doctor laid down by the GMC in Good Medical Practice.
  • Clinical knowledge of the full range mental disorders. Experience in the assessment of complex clinical cases involving severe and enduring mental illness and significant risk histories and the ability to assertively engage and manage such cases
  • Expertise in a comprehensive range of evidence based treatment and case management options including pharmacotherapy.
  • Knowledge of the Mental Health Act, Mental Capacity Act and safeguarding practices
  • Experience in work place based assessments of doctors in training
  • Good understanding of Trust governance structures, especially clinical governance
  • Experience in organising and chairing meetings.

  • Previous experience of working with crisis teams
