Job summary
The post offered is that of Specialty Doctor in acute General Adult and Acute Community Psychiatry. The post is offered on the new 2021 specialty doctor contract terms and conditions.
The first part of the post is split between 2 acute mental health wards based at St Pancras Hospital in the vibrant King's Cross area. The post-holder will work 4 PAs on each ward.
The second part of the post involves working 2PAs at the Mental Health Crisis Assessment Service (MHCAS) is also based on the St Pancras Hospital site.
All these services will be moved to the new Hospital Campus at Highgate (N19 5NX) scheduled for completion towards the end of 2023.
Once MHCAS is based at Highgate the post-holder may also provide support to the Place of Safety Suite that supports patients on section 136.
Main duties of the job
This is a substantive position for 10 Programmed Activities: 9 Direct Clinical Care and 1 Supporting Professional Activities. SPA time is spread proportionately across the different aspects of the post.
The role of the Speciality Doctor is to be a senior medical member of the multi-disciplinary team and to support the team in providing high quality, patient-centred, effective, safe and efficient care.
The post holder will have operational responsibility to the Consultants for each service as well as professional responsibility to the Medical Director.

The emphasis will be on clinical decision making to help the team to provide safe and effective care, with a view to improving our patients illnesses, managing their risks and enabling discharge at the earliest opportunity
The post holder would be involved in assessing and managing patients via a variety of clinical forums such as CPAs, ward rounds, and one-to-one clinical reviews. He or she would also be involved in assessing potential referrals from other wards and prison. In addition, the post holder would be involved in preparing Mental Health Review Tribunal reports and attending tribunals to give evidence.
The post holder would be involved in, and would on occasion be involved in leading, forums that staff use to manage risk and improve communication. You would be involved in morning and lunchtime huddles and in briefings that take place after incidents or interventions.
To function will in the role you would need excellent clinical and interpersonal skills. You should adept at reflecting on your practice, and be able to help other team members to do the same. You would need to be highly organised.
