This post is for 0.4 WTE Locum Consultant Psychiatrist working within the Kentish Town Core Community Mental Health Team as work progresses with the transformation of community mental health services in line with the NHS Long Term plan.
The post is to cover a period during the recruitment of a substantive consultant and is envisaged to be for between 4 and 6 months.
It is available from March 2022.
The post-holder will be part of a multidisciplinary team which includes both statutory and voluntary sector roles and provides holistic care to patients in a primary care setting aligned to the Kentish Town Central Primary Care Network in Camden.
Main duties of the job
- To work within the MDT promoting respect for all professional groups and focusing upon coherent and integrated teamwork.
- To be Section 12(2) approved and have approved clinician status and participate in the Trust-wide Section 12 daytime rota.
- To provide second opinions for Consultant colleagues if requested.
- To keep up with administration and note-keeping on the electronic patient record system in a timely manner.
- To assist with Serious Incident investigations and complaints if requested.
- To keep up-to-date with mandatory training.
- To attend and participate in Consultants' and Management meetings to keep informed of service issues and developments.
- Other management/clinical supporting activity (to be negotiated as required by the Trust.)

Job responsibilities
The specific clinical and managerial responsibilities of the post-holder will be as follows:
- To provide advice and support to Kentish Town GPs, and other practice staff, regarding the assessment and management of the mental health difficulties of patients registered with their practice. This may be done through case discussions, joint consultations and bespoke training as appropriate.
- To provide consultant input and clinical leadership to the Kentish Town Core Team. To assist with diagnosis, formulation, medication reviews, management plans, risk assessments, crisis plans and self-help plans as required for these patients referred to the team.
- As necessary to provide direct clinical assessments of patients registered with the Kentish Town Central GP practices, and to provide follow up as appropriate.
- To assist in the prioritization (triage) of new referrals to the service.
- To maintain effective communication with GPs, primary care staff, patients and their carers.
- To work flexibly within timetabled working hours, so that urgent clinical matters can be prioritised. To carry out Mental Health Act and domiciliary assessments as required.
- To play a key role in implementing improved linkage between primary and secondary care services.
- To liaise and work closely with local IAPT services (also provided by C&I) and other primary care providers in order to provide a joined up primary care mental health service.
- To liaise and work closely with local voluntary services as part of the new model of core community teams
- To provide clinical input, where necessary, to multi-disciplinary case conferencing around difficult patients being managed solely in primary care.
- To engage with local service user participation models.
- To participate in management activities and governance processes related to the Practice Based Mental Health service, including audits and quality improvement projects.
- To play an integral role in the performance of the team, the further development of the service, and the development of clinical pathways and priorities of the service line.

Education/Qualifications/Registration
Essential
- Full registration with the General Medical Council (GMC) and a license to practice. Must be on the specialist register or within 6 months of gaining a Certificate of Completion of Training
- Membership of Royal College of Psychiatrists or equivalent higher qualification in psychiatry
- Specialist accreditation in General adult Psychiatry (Including CESR equivalent)
- Section 12(2) and Approved Clinician status (or eligibility) - qualifies to act as a Responsible Clinician
- Registered with Royal College of Psychiatrists CPD programme and in good standing
- Shared Services training up to date to be an approved trainer/clinical supervisor
Desirable
- Trained as an Educational Supervisor for doctors in training
- Training as a Consultant mentor
- Other relevant post-graduate qualification
Skills & Abilities
Essential
- Experience in undertaking clinical audit, investigating serious incidents and handling complaints
- Teaching and supervision skills for undergraduate medical students, doctors in training and multi-professional staff
Desirable
- Experience in successfully delivering research projects
Knowledge & Experience
Essential
- Knowledge and observance of the requirements and duties of a doctor laid down by the GMC in Good Medical Practice.
- Clinical knowledge of the full range mental disorders.
- Experience in the assessment of complex clinical cases involving severe and enduring mental illness and significant risk histories and the ability to assertively engage and manage such cases. This will include experience working on acute Inpatient wards at senior trainee or Consultant level.
- Knowledge of the Mental Health Act, Mental Capacity Act and safeguarding practices
- Expertise in a comprehensive range of evidence based treatment and case management options including pharmacotherapy.
- Experience in work-place based assessments of doctors in training
Desirable
- Significant previous clinical experience at junior, higher trainee and/or consultant level in Acute ward-based general adult psychiatry
- Experience in teaching small and large groups
- Experience in developing policies and protocols.
- Experience of service development.
- Good understanding of Trust governance structures, especially clinical governance
