Job summary
This fixed term post (12 months) offered is that of Consultant Psychiatrist in General Adult Psychiatry (Liaison). This post is primarily based within the Whittington Liaison Service but it is also expected that you will work flexibly and cover the Health Based Place of Safety (HBPOS) at times and also cross cover with the Consultant at the Mental Health Crisis Assessment Service (MHCAS).
The role of the Consultant is to be the clinical lead of the team and to ensure high, quality, patient-centred, effective, safe and efficient care is delivered by the teams.
Main duties of the job
WHITTINGTON HOSPITAL LIAISON SERVICE
The Liaison Psychiatry Service is a fully integrated service, providing assessment, diagnosis and therapeutic service for patients aged 18 years and above who develop psychiatric morbidity while being treated in the Whittington hospital. The Mental Health Liaison Team accepts referrals for all service users over the age of 18 where there are mental health concerns.
Mental Health Crisis Assessment Service (MHCAS)
This new and evolving service falls within the Hospital division. It was set up initially as a response to the Covid-19 Coronavirus crisis in early 2020. It helped divert psychiatric patients from A&E and the acute hospitals during a period of intense service pressures and infection risk. Its development was also in part driven by longer term considerations of how to more efficiently manage mental health crises (presenting to A&E) and reduce A&E waiting times as well as improving bed management and gate-keeping of admissions. Patients are now triaged and transferred to MHCAS from the A&E departments. The service also accepts direct conveyance by LAS, police and walk-in referrals and is open on a 24/7 basis, accepting new referrals at all hours.
The service caters for adult patients of all ages, including over-65s. (Specialist liaison advice on elderly patients will also be provided by the Old Age Liaison Psychiatrists based in the hospital-based services when required.)

Essential
- Full registration with the General Medical Council (GMC) and a license to practice. Must be on the specialist register or within 6 months of gaining a Certificate of Completion of Training
- Membership of Royal College of Psychiatrists or equivalent higher qualification in psychiatry
- Section 12(2) and Approved Clinician status (or eligibility) - qualifies to act as a Responsible Clinician
- Registered with Royal College of Psychiatrists CPD programme and in good standing
- Training up to date to be an approved trainer/clinical supervisor in line with GMC recognition and approval of trainers which is overseen by the LETB
Desirable
- Other relevant post-graduate qualification
- Trained as an Educational Supervisor for doctors in training
- Training as a Consultant mentor

- Knowledge and observance of the requirements and duties of a doctor laid down by the GMC in Good Medical Practice.
