The post offered is a consultant position in old age psychiatry split between Pearl Ward based at the Highgate Mental Health Centre (7PAs) and an additional 1PA to assist with the ECT rota (although this is not an absolute requirement), and one day a week (2Pas) working in the Whittington liaison service on the adjacent site
Pearl ward is a 14 bedded ward primarily for older adults with functional mental illness.
This is a short-term locum post planned to help cover maternity leave for the substantive post-holder. The post is available from 7th March 2022 for approximately 2-3 months.
The Trust is open to flexible working. If required it will be possible to reduce the locum post sessions to 6-8Pas, thereby restricting it to mainly cover of Pearl ward.
Main duties of the job
The post-holder is expected to review patients together with the MDT on the ward on a regular basis. They will act as the Responsible Clinician for patients on Pearl ward who are detained under the Mental Health Act. They will also be expected to provide clinical supervision to the trainee doctors working on the ward.
The post-holder will provide clinical leadership to Pearl ward and one day a week into the Whittington liaison service. This will include routine / emergency clinical assessments on the hospital wards, including assessments in A&E if required, providing clinical supervision to the team's Psychiatric Trainees and other team members and providing specialist consultation and advice to medical colleagues at the Whittington Hospital, including contributing to the training programme for hospital staff, and advice on mental capacity assessments. The post-Holder will participate in a daily Team supervision/clinical de-briefing session for overnight On-call Core trainees (when handing over clinical responsibility to the team's medical team).

The post-holder is expected to review patients together with the MDT on the ward on a regular basis. They will act as the Responsible Clinician for patients on Pearl ward who are detained under the Mental Health Act. They will also be expected to provide clinical supervision to the trainee doctors working on the ward.
The Post-holder will contribute to overall clinical leadership to an experienced Multi-disciplinary team. This will include routine / emergency clinical assessments on the hospital wards, including assessments in A&E if required, providing clinical supervision to the teams Psychiatric Trainees and other team members and providing specialist consultation and advice to medical colleagues at the Whittington Hospital, including contributing to the training programme for hospital staff, and advice on mental capacity assessments. The post-Holder will participate in a daily Team supervision/clinical de-briefing session for overnight On-call Core trainees (when handing over clinical responsibility to the teams medical team).
The liaison service is staffed by a full-time consultant and additional part-time consultants, including old age consultants, also input into the service. The expectation is that the post-holder will work in this service on one day a week only, between 9-17.00. Any input required outside of these hours will be picked up by other members of the team. The post holder will work in an integrated way with the rest of the liaison team, seeing referrals for both general and older age adults on the in-patient wards. The Whittington Hospital liaison team provides a 24/7 integrated model of care for all patients in keeping with the RAID model and the post holder will work as part of this team, and provide assessments for patients across the age range. The service receives 30-40 referrals per month. The team comprises 2 WTE consultants one liaison nurse during working hours, 0.5WTE higher trainee, 0.5WTE service manager and admin support.
The Post-Holder will also act as Responsible Clinician (RC) for patients who are also under the Mental Health Act during Inpatient admissions to the Whittington Hospital and/or patients transferred from mental health units for a prolonged period and whose section papers have been transferred to the Whittington Hospital.

Education/Qualifications/Registration
Essential
- Full registration with the General Medical Council (GMC) and a license to practice. Must be on the specialist register or within 6 months of gaining a Certificate of Completion of Training
- Membership of Royal College of Psychiatrists or equivalent higher qualification in psychiatry
- Section 12(2) and Approved Clinician status (or eligibility) - qualifies to act as a Responsible Clinician
- Registered with Royal College of Psychiatrists CPD programme and in good standing
Desirable
- Training up to date to be an approved trainer/clinical supervisor in line with GMC recognition and approval of trainers which is overseen by the LETB Certificates of training
- Training as a Consultant mentor
- Other relevant post-graduate qualification

- Experience in undertaking clinical audit, investigating serious incidents and handling complaints
- Teaching and supervision skills for undergraduate medical students, doctors in training and multi-professional staff

- Experience and competency in delivering Electro-Convulsive Therapy
- Good understanding of Trust governance structures, especially clinical governance
