Job summary

The EIS is part of the care pathway for patients with a first episode of psychotic illnesses. The care pathway applies the recovery model of care and it delivers evidence based treatments. The postholder will primarily take responsibility for patients living in Camden alongside the other Camden EIS consultant. The EIS is based at 4 Greenland Road, London, NW1 0AX.

This is a new substantive consultant post which has been created to increase the senior medical leadership to the Camden EIS Team.

Main duties of the job

The postholder will provide joint clinical leadership to the Camden part of the EIS, alongside the other consultant psychiatrist, Dr Petros Lekkos who works 0.8 WTE in the team. The post holder will be supported by a full time core trainee and part time foundation doctor (0.2 WTE) who is shared with the in-patient unit.

The post-holder will be encouraged and supported to pursue any research interests, with the support of their academic colleagues in the UCL Department of Mental Health Sciences. Camden is a vibrant and busy Central London borough with a rich mix of cultures and ethnic groups and a diverse urban geography from Bloomsbury to Hampstead.

Education/Qualifications/Registration

Essential

  • Full registration with the General Medical Council (GMC) and a license to practice. Must be on the specialist register or within 6 months of gaining a Certificate of Completion of Training
  • Membership of Royal College of Psychiatrists or equivalent higher qualification in psychiatry
  • Section 12(2) and Approved Clinician status (or eligibility) - qualifies to act as a Responsible Clinician
  • Registered with Royal College of Psychiatrists CPD programme and in good standing
  • Registered with Royal College of Psychiatrists CPD programme and in good standing
  • Shared Services training up to date to be an approved trainer/clinical supervisor

Desirable

  • Other relevant post-graduate qualification
  • Trained as an Educational Supervisor for doctors in training
  • Training as a Consultant mentor

Knowledge & Experience

Essential

  • Knowledge and observance of the requirements and duties of a doctor laid down by the GMC in Good Medical Practice
  • Clinical knowledge of the full range mental disorders.
  • Experience in the assessment of complex clinical cases involving severe and enduring mental illness and significant risk histories and the ability to assertively engage and manage such cases.
  • Expertise in a comprehensive range of evidence based treatment and case management options including pharmacotherapy.
  • Knowledge of the Mental Health Act, Mental Capacity Act and safeguarding practices
  • Experience in work place based assessments of doctors in training
  • Good understanding of Trust governance structures, especially clinical governance

Desirable

  • Experience in teaching small and large groups
  • Experience in developing policies and protocols.

Skills & Abilities

  • Teaching and supervision skills for undergraduate medical students, doctors in training and multi-professional staff
  • Experience in undertaking clinical audit, investigating serious incidents and handling complaints
