Job summary

This is an exciting opportunity for a highly motivated individual to join a very busy Mental Health Act Team with dedicated Mental Health Act (MHA) Officers.

Our MHA Officers ensure that the administrative functions of the Mental Health Act 1983 run efficiently and in accordance with the Mental Health Act 1983, Code of Practice, current and future mental health law.

They provide a broad range of varied advice and guidance based on an in-depth knowledge of the Mental Health Act 1983 to all disciplines across the Trust.

Each MHA Officer facilitates the smooth running of Mental Health Tribunals and Hospital Managers' hearings; ensuring that the Care Trust meets all professional and legal requirements and responsibilities.

The successful applicant will be responsible for the Mental Health Act (MHA) administration of a case load of up to 50 in-patient and community clients.

Main duties of the job

  • Educated to GCSE level or equivalent in English and Maths
  • Level 4 Certificate in Mental Health Law or prepared to work towards it
  • ECDL or equivalent experience

Knowledge

Essential

  • In depth knowledge of the Mental Health Act.
  • Basic awareness of the Human Rights Act and the Mental Capacity Act
  • Ability to use Clinical Information Systems with a high degree of confidence.
  • Ability to use Microsoft Office suite with a high degree of accuracy, particularly using Word and Excel

Desirable

  • Knowledge of admin systems in the NHS.

Experience

  • Experience of working on own initiative in organizing work within a department.
  • Experience of working in a busy office environment and to strict deadlines.
