Job summary

We have an exciting opportunity to works as a GP Medical Advisor at Children in Care

The post holder will be required to support the Named Nurse and Doctor to ensure that the organisation meets its responsibilities to looked after children.

The post holder will be responsible to and accountable within the managerial framework of the Trust.

At all times and in relation to the roles and responsibilities listed, the post holder will work as a member of the Trust's looked after children health team.

Main duties of the job

  • To Undertake initial health assessments for looked after children including completion of written reports.
  • Review adult health reports in order to provide a brief written summary report to panel on the health of prospective carers.
  • Support and advise colleagues in the clinical assessment and care of children and young people, whilst being clear about others' personal clinical professional accountability.
  • Liaise closely with other specialist services such as CAMHS.
  • Liaise with professionals from other agencies, such as Education and Children's Social Care.
  • Advise local Police, Children's Social Care and other statutory and voluntary agencies on health matters with regard to individual looked after children.
  • Ensure advice is available to the other professionals across the organisation on day to-day issues about looked after children and their families, including involvement in fostering and adoption panels according to local arrangements.
  • Work closely with other Specialist, Named and Designated Looked After Children professionals locally, and potentially regionally and nationally.
  • Encourage case discussion, reflective practice, and the monitoring of significant events at a local level.

Working collaboratively with all relevant parties across the local health economy, within their specialist area, the post holder will provide clinical expertise to support the Trust to ensure that the organisation meets its responsibilities to children looked after and their parents / carers.

The GP will be required to conduct holistic Initial Health Assessments for children new into care. The GP will be supported by a Nursery Nurse; 2-3 children (depending on age, complexity, sibling groups) will be seen in each clinic session and a written report completed for each child seen. Another component of the role is to review adult fostering/adoption medical forms, to provide a summary report to fostering/adoption panels.

The Initial Health Assessment is a vital intervention to support the health, well-being and achievement of children and young people who become looked after. The post holder will therefore play a key role in ensuring a timely assessment and identification of any unmet health needs, with responsibilities outlined, and in accordance with professional standards,

Qualifications

Essential

  • Full GMC registration with license to practice at the time of appointment
  • Registered member of the appropriate professional body

Desirable

  • MRCGP
  • Diploma Child Health

Training & Experience

Essential

  • Extended training in Paediatrics.
  • Clinical experience of assessing and examining children and young people as appropriate to the role.
  • Currently practicing as a GP

Desirable

  • Clinical experience in a setting working in multi-cultural, multi-ethnic setting
  • Previous experience of working with children in care
  • Experience of trauma informed practice and ACES
