Looking for an opportunity to work in maternity and gain a Level 3 Diploma?

We are recruiting a Band 3 Part-time post (22.5 hrs) in Newborn-Hearing Screening, based at the Luton and Dunstable Maternity Unit. This post comes with training and study towards a Level 3 Diploma in Screening.

The post is dependent on achieving: an external clinical assessment, and the NHS E, level 3 Diploma in Newborn Hearing Screening, within 2 years of recruitment. Followed by 2 years consolidation in practice.

Previous experience or training in Newborn Hearing or maternity screening is an advantage as is holding an NHS Care Certificate level 2 or equivalent.

You will be responsible for screening new-born babies in a busy unit, recording and collecting data, and liaising with parents and health professionals. You should have excellent communication and interpersonal skills as well as basic computer skills.

This is a 7 day / week service. Shift times are 08:00 to 16:00 hrs. Flexibility and adaptability is necessary working at least 1 weekend in 3 - 4.

Essential Criteria:

Car driver/owner

Holds Maths and English GCSE grade 4 or equivalent.

Other evidence of training e.g. level 2 Diploma in a relevant subject.

Main duties of the job

JOB PURPOSE: To offer a screen to all new-borns for the identificationof congenital hearing loss, in order that the appropriate audiology referral is made for prompt assessment at the expected age. The post holder will work in a small team togather and accurately record clinical and test data relevant to the screening process both manually andelectronically and to liaise with parents, Health Professionals, other stake holders as appropriate. This post involves direct handling of Newborn Babies and contact with parents as well as close working with a range of health professionals. The Bedfordshire team Luton & Bedford screen between 8500 and 9000 per year. Daily calibration, safety, and security checks of equipment. reporting any faults to senior screener

To liaise effectively with parents, NHSP Manager, team members, maternity health care professionals and Audiologists.

To explain and gain consent for the hearing screening tests and possible outcomes to parents

To perform the screening using AOE and AABR methods on well babies and babies in Neonatal Unit.

To explain, the results of the screening tests and their significance to parents.

To record results accurately.

Refer to next stage of screening pathway.

Support anxious, distressed, or emotional parents.

To promote a professional, welcoming, and caring environment endorsing a family friendly approach to care.

Maintain the confidentiality of babies and their families.

Aware of infection control and adhere to local policy and procedures.

The post involves walking between wards to locate mothers and babies, pushing of trolleys between wards, and the need to bend or be in a restricted space for short periods several times per shift.

Moving and positioning of equipment and trolleys at bedside

Direct handling of new-born and pre- term babies/ NNU babies.

Dexterity in use of specialise equipment.

The post will involve sitting at a PC for at least an hour per shift. Car Driver Insured for Business use.

Travelling between hospital and clinic settings, transporting equipment.

The post holder will also be required to travel between bases and transport equipment and records in a manual carrying case Walking small distances dependent on parking availability.

Working with a PC and keyboard. Careful handling and care of screening equipment.

Good hand eye coordination and dexterity is required to manipulate some screening equipment.
