Job summary

Based in Bedford and Central Bedfordshire

This is a fixed term 12 month post to cover maternity leave for the existing post holder.

The post holder will be the lead therapist within the Speech & Language Therapy team for the service into mainstream schools in Central Bedfordshire.

Will provide highly specialist clinical input in schools and advise regarding the development of services in this area.

Will have day-to-day responsibility for coordinating a speech & language therapy service into schools in Central Bedfordshire

Will be the main point of contact for schools and parent / carers.

Will provide training to enable parents and other professionals to support children's language and communication needs.

Main duties of the job

Use highly specialist clinical skills to manage a specialist caseload of children with or without an EHCP in mainstream education.

Identify, assess and diagnose communication impairments and select appropriate patients and type of therapy for effective treatment.

Take a clinical lead role in service development in this area

Have a specialist advisory role for the Trust in this speciality area, giving service wide second and expert opinions

Take responsibility for service wide developments as appropriate and development within their locality.

Allocate and lead on the shared caseload within Central Bedfordshire, allocating time and resources dependent on service needs.

Independently take students on placement for clinical teaching and supervision, including exam placement

Take a clinical leadership role for qualified and unqualified staff working at lower grades and volunteers.

Job responsibilities

To identify, assess and diagnose speech, language and communication impairments and select appropriate patients and type of therapy for effective treatment.

To assess, develop and implement highly specialist speech and language therapy treatment and discharge as appropriate. To make a differential diagnosis on the basis of evidence from assessment and design appropriate treatment based on analysis of profile of need.

To analyse and interpret complex information relating to patients and to service provision in order to plan patient care and service development.

To use clinical skills to generate written reports reflecting specialist knowledge in area of expertise.

Be responsible for delivering highly specialist speech and language therapy input to children and young people of all ages, covering all types of disorders of communication.

To provide advice to others regarding the management and care of patients / clients with communication issues.

To employ counselling skills with patients/ carers with complex needs.

To make highly specialist clinical decisions following assessment of complex cases, including identification of children who need an onward referral to a specialist centre or Paediatrician.

Make independent decisions about caseload management, including discharge.

To plan, organise and prioritise own workload, clinical and non-clinical.

To have knowledge of and contribute to the EHCP process within the given timescales, including preparing reports with outcomes and targets for the initial report and for annual reviews as required.

To provide reports requested for Tribunals as appropriate.

To triage new referrals into the service and reject or accept these based on service criteria, including skills in discussing potential referrals with referrers.

To provide second opinions and shadowing opportunities for less experienced colleagues

To take a lead on the development and delivery of training (formal and informal) and reflect on and evaluate training provided.
