Job responsibilities

To provide psychological assessments of parent-infant relationships and the wider family context, based upon the appropriate use, interpretation and integration of complex data from a variety of sources.

To develop psychological formulations of presenting problems or situations that integrate information from assessments within a coherent framework that draws upon psychological theory and evidence and which incorporates biological, psychological and social aspects.

To be responsible for implementing a range of psychological interventions 1:1 and in group settings, that will enhance the parent-infant relationship, adjusting and refining approach by reviewing and evolving the hypotheses and formulation, and making use of different explanatory models as appropriate.

To evaluate and make decisions about intervention options within the team, taking into account both theoretical and therapeutic models associated with parent-infant relationships, and focusing on enhancing the attachment and bonding process through the perinatal period using current research.

To exercise autonomous professional responsibility for the assessment, treatment, and discharge of clients whose problems are managed by psychologically based care plans.

To provide specialist parent-infant relationship and child psychological development advice, guidance and consultation to other professionals, that enhances staff confidence, and contributes directly towards clients care.

To undertake risk assessment and risk management for individual clients and to provide advice to other professions on psychological aspects of risk assessment and risk management in line with Cambridge Community Services and inter-agency policies and procedures.

To produce reports on clients, in a timely manner, that convey the key findings of assessment, formulation, intervention and outcome, in a way that does justice to the complexity of the problems described, but that are understandable to the recipients of the reports, including parents/carers and other professionals.

To work as an active member of an integrated multi-disciplinary team, participating in the teams assessment of needs, planning, implementation and evaluation of care to families under the care of the team.

To work with partners, siblings and wider family members as required, in order to help them to support the development of the parent-infant relationship.

To attend relevant professional meetings regarding families care, bringing a parent-infant relationship perspective to formulating a families presenting difficulties.

To plan and prioritise workload, exercising autonomous professional responsibility for the assessment and treatment of families.

To gain additional specialist experience and skills relevant to the post, as agreed with the professional and service managers, and in line with professional policy on CPD.

Person Specification

Qualifications and Training

Essential

• Doctoral level training in clinical psychology, as accredited by the BPS, or a BPS Statement of Equivalence / Registered with the HCPC
• Successful completion of post graduate psychoanalytic child and adolescent psychotherapy which is approved and monitored by the Association of Child Psychotherapists. / Practising Psychotherapist who is a fully qualified registered member of the relevant accrediting body e.g. UKCP, ACP, BPC or BACP

Experience

Essential

• Experience of psychological assessment, formulation and treatment of clients across the full range of care settings, including outpatient, community, primary care and in-client settings
• Demonstrates understanding of safeguarding issues, and has an ability to safeguard and promote the welfare of vulnerable children/young people/vulnerable adults
• Shows a realistic appreciation of the challenges of working with children and young people/vulnerable adults

Knowledge & Skills

Essential

• Knowledge of theoretical models and practice of specialised psychological interventions relevant to the needs of this population
• Advanced knowledge of infant/child development, infant/child mental health, attachment theory and the impact of trauma
• Accepts responsibility and accountability for own work and can define the responsibilities of others
