Job summary

County Durham and Darlington NHS Foundation Trust invite applications for the position of Theatre Manager at Durham Hospital. We are looking for a dynamic and highly motivated person to lead our Theatre team and manage the

Operating Theatres within the University Hospital of North Durham. The candidate must be a

Registered Nurse/Operating Department Practitioner, and have significant experience of working in the

Operating Theatres at a senior level.

Main duties of the job

You will take operational and clinical leadership responsibility for our theatre suites, ensuring safe, efficient, and high-quality surgical services. Working closely with surgeons, anaesthetists, nurses, ODPs, and wider MDT colleagues, youll be the driving force behind smooth patient flow, effective scheduling, and a positive team culture.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Leading and managing the day-to-day running of all operating theatres
  • Ensuring compliance with clinical governance, infection control, and safety standards
  • Managing staffing, workforce planning, and skill mix across the department
  • Overseeing theatre utilisation, scheduling, and productivity targets
  • Supporting service development, innovation, and quality improvement initiatives
  • Maintaining excellent communication with clinical teams and senior leadership
  • Championing a culture of learning, accountability, and compassionate care

We provide hospital services from two acute sites - Darlington Memorial Hospital and University Hospital of North Durham. We have a centre for planned care in Bishop Auckland and provide care from community hospitals in Chester-le-Street, Shotley Bridge, Barnard Castle, Sedgefield and Weardale as well as over 80 other community based settings and providing care in patients' homes.
