Job summary
This exciting post has been established on a temporary basis
in the first instance, to support the expansion of activity within the service
to manage an increased demand and backlog. There is a view to making this a
permanent post in the future. As part of this, a key opportunity for this role
is to support the expansion of Plastic Surgery activity into the Bishop
Integrated Surgical Hub as the trusts aspirant designated elective hub.
The current strategy of the service is the overall expansion
of the services capacity to improve access standards across the trust. Further
similar posts are likely to follow. The post will work incredibly closely with
colleagues across the organisation to ensure timely care for patients in line
and aspiringly exceeding national expectations.
As a senior clinical leader within the
organisation, this post will lead an acute plastic surgery service, providing
and leading a wide variety of direct clinical care duties across the CDDFT
localities.
Main duties of the job
The consultant will be part of a 9 Plastic Surgery
Consultant team that form the Plastic Surgery Service based at the University
Hospital of North Durham site but whom service the geography of the County
Durham and Darlington population via the delivery of DCC across multiple
satellite sites.
The Plastic Surgery department is a surgical
specialty within the Surgical Care Group. The unit currently provides Plastic
Surgery services to the population of Durham, Darlington, North Yorkshire,
Bishop Auckland, Sunderland, and South Tyneside. The department works on a hub
and spoke basis with inpatient elective and Trauma work based on the University
Hospital of Durham (UHND) site, day case and outpatient clinics on the Bishop
Auckland and Shotley Bridge sites and outpatient clinics only in Sunderland, South
Tyneside, and Sedgefield hospitals. Sub-specialty interests of Skin, Upper
Limb, Breast Reconstruction, Perineal Reconstruction, Head & Neck,
Hyposdadius and general Plastic Surgery Trauma are all covered We regularly
collabroate with all other surgical specialties in the management of complex
cases.

holder will be required to hold FRCS plast and be registered with the GMC on
the specialist register for Plastic Surgery. Ideally the post holder will have
comprehensive experience and trainnig in microvascular techniques and have an
interest in complex head and neck skin cancer surgery and reconstruction.
For
management purposes and use of resources the post holder will be accountable to
the Clinical Lead of Plastic Surgery and will ensure the effective and
efficient use of resources allocated.
The post
holder will be expected to support the Service Management team in matters
associated with patient access to ensure patients within the service do not
exceed national expectations around wait times unless clinically necessary.
The post
holder will be responsible for the professional and educational supervision of
junior staff.
The post
holder will be expected to participate in the postgraduate teaching of medical
staff as well as teaching of undergraduates attached to the Trust and in the
training of all grades of staff.
Continuing
Professional Development (CPD) the post holder is responsible for ensuring
that they meet the national requirements for CPD, both internal and
external. You will be expected to attend regularly and contribute to audit
and governance meetings held by the Directorate.
It is
expected that the post holder will participate in clinical audit.
