Job summary

We are looking for an enthusiastic registered nurse with an interest in Ophthalmology to join our team at County Durham and Darlington NHS Foundation trust.

We are responsible for providing a specialist ophthalmic service for the population of County Durham and Darlington across two sites, which encompasses Darlington Memorial Hospital and Bishop Aukland Hospital.

The department will offer the successful candidate an opportunity to develop in your role as a staff nurse within the ophthalmology team. The successful candidate must possess excellent communication skills, a high sense of professionalism and a strong belief in the value of team work. You will help formulate and carry out effective care for our patients and ensure it is delivered to the highest possible level.

You will have the opportunity to gain experience in all areas of Ophthalmology which includes eye clinic, eye urgent care and the injection rooms.

The post is predominately Monday to Friday but we do work in urgent care on a Saturday and Sunday morning and on the bank holidays apart from Christmas and New Year which is all done on a rotaional basis.

Main duties of the job

Ophthalmology has specialist skills in all areas. You will learn how to perform visual acuity tests, visual field testing, looking after patients in the injection room and learning triage skills for eye urgent care. Opportunities to learn pre-assessment are also available.

Nurse also cannulate for angiography and giving IV drugs.

Qualified nurses learn organisational skills by acting as the ward co-ordinator and paper work entails prepping of the packs for each days work

We provide hospital services from two acute sites - Darlington Memorial Hospital and University Hospital of North Durham. We have a centre for planned care in Bishop Auckland and provide care from community hospitals in Chester-le-Street, Shotley Bridge, Barnard Castle, Sedgefield and Weardale as well as over 80 other community based settings and providing care in patients' homes.
