Job summary

This advert is only open to applicants who are currently employed by County Durham and Darlington NHS Foundation Trust.

We have an exciting opportunity for Registered Adult Nurses, who are employees of CDDFT and who already have a relevant degree, to study Midwifery at Masters level.

Whilst working with our Midwifery team at the hospital, you will undertake MSc Midwifery shortened programme over 24 months via the University Of Bradford. This course equips you with the skills, knowledge and professional insight needed to become a registered midwife whilst working within County Durham and Darlington NHS Foundation Trust.

Salary support for the duration of the course is provided by Health Education England at a maximum salary of top band 5 (AFC). As this is a studentship, previous higher salary bandings will not be matched and there are no enhanced payments for unsociable hours.

Health Education England will also be funding all university tuition fees for those commencing shortened midwifery training between January 2022 - April 2025 (up to a maximum of £9,250 per annum). Successful applicants will need to be able to travel to University of Bradford for the theoretical elements of the course, approx 12 days per year. Course commences 24th March 2025.

Main duties of the job

This programme provides Registered Adult Nurses, who already have a relevant degree, with the opportunity to study Midwifery at Masters level. This course equips them with the skills, knowledge and professional insight needed to become a registered midwife. Whether it is helping women during pregnancy and birth, or giving support to new mothers, you work alongside our midwifery teams at CDDFT, learning through doing, building your confidence as you go. You will graduate ready to excel as a fully rounded Midwife and eligible for registration with the NMC on the midwifery register.

The aim of this course is to prepare safe, competent and confident midwives who can positively contribute to the health of childbearing women, people, newborn, infants and their families. They will gain the knowledge, skills and behaviours to meet the future challenges of a rapidly evolving healthcare system.

This MSc course (shortened programme) will build on your skills and knowledge as a registered adult nurse to continue to work as part of our multi-professional team and develop into an autonomous registered midwife ready to join our maternity team.

Job responsibilities

The post holder will work with the maternity team, mothers and their families carrying out assigned tasks involving direct care including, clinical care, information giving, guidance and reassurance, assistance and support to women and their families under the guidance and supervision of a registered midwife.

This role is for NMC registered nurses to complete a shortened midwifery MSc over two years leading to eligability to register as a Midwife with the NMC. It will include a combination of work-based and academic learning between the County Durham and Darlington NHS Foundation Trust and an approved Accredited Education Institute (AEI) - The University of Bradford.

They will have assigned placements within the CDDFT Maternity Unit across all clinical areas to obtain the necessary knowledge, skills and experience to meet the learning outcomes for the NMC register as a Midwife.

The post holder will:

Be allocated maternity placements in the hospital and in the community setting to gain the knowledge and experience to meet the requirements of the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC).

Be required to achieve the standards as set out by the NMC and AEI and on completion of the programme register as a midwife.

Take every opportunity to develop their own practice and expand their own general and specialist midwifery skills.

Display effective communication and work as a role model by adhering to the Trust expected behaviours and values.

Be required to commit to self-directed study and successfully complete the educational programme within the contract period.

Act with integrity and professionalism upholding the reputation of the trust and midwifery profession at all times.

Work within risk management/ occupational health legislation and Trusts procedures for safe working practices.

Demonstrates the Trusts values at all times and is aware of national and local objectives for maternity care.

2. Under the supervision of a midwife is able to plan and implement holistic, culturally sensitive, respectful, non-judgemental care for women with a wide range of care needs. Undertakes other care practices as directed by the Midwife, but is able to carry out routine care duties at own discretion. Practices in accordance with the Trusts protocols and guidelines.

3. Undertakes specific clinical skills under the supervision of a midwife as appropriate to the clinical area

4. Displays analytical and judgement skills, within own sphere of practice, related to womens comfort, mobility, support needs. Uses initiative when responding to changes in the woman or babys condition.

5. Displays excellent two way communication with women, families and colleagues. Is able to overcome barriers to understanding when the womans first language is not English or has a learning or hearing difficulty. Demonstrate appropriate assertiveness and ability to challenge others when the rights of women and others may be infringed

6. Participates in recording observations under the indirect supervision of the midwife, ensuring these are accurately recorded and reported.

8. Support and advise on Infant Feeding practices in line with UNICEF Baby Friendly Initiative guidelines.
