Job summary

We are seeking to appoint a motivated and enthusiastic individual with excellent comminication and organisational skills, a keen eye for detail and the ability to concentrate for extended periods to join our Cellular Pathology secretarial team. We closely support the Histology Laboratory and Consultant Pathologist Team at University Hospital North Durham. The secretarial team are based in our own large office at Old Trust HQ.

We provide secretarial support by typing diagnostic histology and post-mortem reports and meet all other secretarial and admin needs including answering email and telephone enquiries, scanning reports and filing.

The Histology Department are in the process of launching digital platforms for reporting and voice recognition has been introduced and this role is at the forefront of this new technology. It therefore provides an ideal opportunity to gain knowledge and experience of a broad range of modern secretarial tasks which would provide excellent skills for future development.

Main duties of the job

Produce typed copies of Histology reports.

Provide secretarial support to the Consultant Medical staff (including minute taking).

Prepare specimens and documentation for referral to genetic testing sites nationwide.

Provide secretarial support to technical staff as required.

Liaise with Coroners Officers/Mortuaries to arrange post-mortem examinations.

Produce post-mortem reports and distribute to HM Coroners Officers.

Deal with telephone and email enquiries appropriately.

Sort incoming mail and prepare outgoing mail for posting.

Give non-clinical advice as directed.

Order and maintain adequate levels of stationery and supplies.

Maintain electronic diaries as required.

You will work as part of the wider Cellular Pathology Team (Biomedical Scientists and Consultant Pathologists) following Standard Operating Procedures to carry out all secretarial tasks. This will include typing accurate histology reports ensuring that they are distributed to their intended recipient within agreed turnaround times. We ensure material for genetic testing and expert second opinion is packaged appropriately and sent to the appropriate lab/Trust, keeping an accurate and updated record of sending/report receipt. We provide results and information to other healthcare professionals on request and liaise with HM Coroner to arrange post-mortem examinations and produce final reports. We provide minute taking for laboratory meetings as required. These activities involve frequent utilisation of Microsoft Word Packages and the Laboratory Information Management System
