Job summary
This is an exciting opportunity to join CDDFT as a
Phlebomist. To work as an independent practitioner, providing blood sampling procedures
at the request of medical, surgical and nursing staff across all directorates
in the Trust.
The successful candidate would be required to work flexibly
and may be required to work at other sites within the Trust as directed by
service need.

Main duties of the job
The post holder will work as part of a team based within the
Acute Intervention Team.
To carry out all procedures safely and maintain high
standards of care at all times
Take blood from a range of different patient groups
including acutely unwell and elderly patients.
Adhere to high standards of cleanliness with strict regard
for infection control procedures. Adhering to Trust Policy Guidelines for the
Management of Venepuncture.
Be able to communicate with the multi-disciplinary team and
be committed to flexible and supportive team working.
Ensure patients are received in a professional,
understanding and efficient manner and are treated safely and courteously

We provide hospital services from two acute sites - Darlington Memorial Hospital and University Hospital of North Durham. We have a centre for planned care in Bishop Auckland and provide care from community hospitals in Chester-le-Street, Shotley Bridge, Barnard Castle, Sedgefield and Weardale as well as over 80 other community based settings and providing care in patients' homes.

Job responsibilities
Work with other colleagues as part of the Acute Intervention
team to support the delivery of phlebotomy services for CDDFT.
To obtain blood samples by venepuncture from out-patients
and in-patients at medical and surgical request, adhering strictly to relevant
policies and procedures.
Blood samples obtained are for various purposes where
protocols for these procedures must be understood and adhered to.
To work as a member of a multidisciplinary team, dealing
with a wide range of patients including barrier nursed and the critically ill.
Patients may have needle phobias and protocol for dealing with these situations
must be adhered to.
To liaise with nursing and medical staff to organise and
prioritise workload.
Monitor venepuncture stock levels on the wards, outpatients
and in venepuncture rooms to ensure adequate levels are maintained.
Report any untoward incidents to the Matron/Senior Nurse
following Trust policies/procedures.
Aware of the responsibilities of each member of staff in
terms of Trust health and safety policies.
Ensure a safe and effective working environment at all times.
To supervise and assist in the training of staff as
required.
To always approach patients, hospital visitors and
colleagues in a professional and courteous manner.
To undertake training and competency assessments as required
of the post.
Contribute to audit
