An exciting opportunity exists to join the existing general
surgical team within Darlington Memorial Hospital The post is for 12 months, however, it is renewable on yearly basis
depending on satisfactory progression. There is another post for 6-8 months
only. (Two posts in total)
The basic contract is for ten programmed activities but
there will need to be a discussion with the post holder regarding the final job
plan/on-call arrangements, prior to commencement of the appointment.
These are Speciality Doctor posts that will rotate between
the sub-specialist teams providing services for residents within the catchment
area of County Durham and Darlington NHS Foundation Trust. The post is for 12

Main duties of the job
The post has a flexible programme,
but will be expected to comprise elective and emergency in-patient and day case
surgery, general and specialist out-patient clinics and regular ward work. The
Department has a commitment to the career progression of Career Grade Doctors
and skills required for specialist aspects of the post which will be developed
within the post
The post advertised is for a Speciality Grade
Doctor working in the department of general surgery at Darlington Memorial
Hospital & Bishop Auckland General Hospital. Working as a member of the
General Surgery Department Team the successful candidate will provide a high
quality service that aims to deliver excellent patient care. Team allocations will rotate to allow
exposure to subspecialties including colorectal, upper GI & bariatric,
benign hepatobiliary, emergency & breast surgery. These posts offer the opportunity for
post-holders to develop/consolidate their surgical skills & experience with
direct consultant supervision.

may involve programmed activities across the Trust. The post includes a
commitment to being on-call, providing 1 in 9 cover as part of middle grade
rota, full shift.
The post has a flexible programme, but will be expected to

To staff
outpatient clinics which will include new, review and urgent referrals
Preparation
of patients for theatre and post-operative care.
Dealing
with both routine and emergency attenders.
Assisting
in theatre and post-operative care.
Dependant
on experience will undertake certain surgical procedures and minor operations
independently.
Be
involved in complex clinical, patient management problems and
inter-disciplinary planning treatment.
Participation
in duty rota. 1 in 9 as part of the middle grade rota.
Endoscopy-
training opportunities as part of JAG accreditation process may be available
A
face-to-face handover of care must take place at the start and end of the day,
with written and verbal communication about all general surgery inpatients.
Completion
of electronic discharge summaries is mandatory for all patients on the day of
discharge
Help
develop new services where needed.
Be
expected to take an active part in continuing medical education and
undergraduate teaching.
Full
engagement with Clinical Audit and Clinic Governance is required.
