Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for Healthcare Assistant Apprentices to work within the Theatres Department County Durham and Darlington NHS Foundation Trust. The post is to provide healthcare support to a dedicated team in accordance with the Trusts policies and procedures whilst studying a Senior Healthcare Support Worker Level 3 Apprenticeship. There are 3 post based at Darlington Memorial Hospital in Theatres. Formal training sessions will be part of the Apprenticeship programme delivered in partnership with New College Durham. Training will take place at New College Durham or at one of County Durham and Darlington NHS Foundation Trust premises. There is the possibility for progression to the permanent post of Health Care Assistant within CDDFT

Due to the nature of the training role, applicants must be over 18 years old to apply.

This opportunity is an apprenticeship and in order to access an apprenticeship applicants must be a UK Resident. A non-UK national is eligible to apply if they have been ordinarily resident in the UK and Islands for at least the previous 3 years on the first day of their apprenticeship and have permission to work in the UK

Main duties of the job

Healthcare Assistant Apprentices will receive appropriate training and guidance to undertake the full range of duties which will include

To provide assistance during clinical and nursing procedures relevant to the theatres department

To work with other health care staff in delivering patient care

To develop skills in performing , basic health assessments

To attend all Trust mandatory and statutory training programmes

To maintain professional standards with reference to appearance, manner and punctuality

To carry out any other reasonable duties, as required

The apprenticeship entails learning the role of a healthcare assistant in theatres, their duties and responsibilites whilst caring for patients. You will be responsible for providing excellent patient care whilst working as part of an effective team.

We provide hospital services from two acute sites - Darlington Memorial Hospital and University Hospital of North Durham. We have a centre for planned care in Bishop Auckland and provide care from community hospitals in Chester-le-Street, Shotley Bridge, Barnard Castle, Sedgefield and Weardale as well as over 80 other community based settings and providing care in patients' homes.

Undertake and complete the trusts rotational theatre healthcare assistant development programme, facilitating exposure and learning of all surgical specialities within the trust

Engage in regular progress reviews with allocated mentors

Learn and develop skills to support the registered practitioners with the delivery of high quality care in the perioperative setting.

Develop the competencies to execute the role of a circulating staff member within a Theatre Team.

Learn to prepare and provide the surgical instruments and any supplementary items for surgery with oversight from a senior healthcare or registered professional

Learn to understand how to prepare the clinical environment for anaesthetic and surgical procedures and the underpinning infection control principles behind such preparation

Learn the principles and ability to positioning of patients for their specific procedure with consideration of pressure area care and patient comfort and dignity.

Escorting and transferring patients between departments ensuring privacy and dignity is maintained.

Be an effective part of the multi-disciplinary team
