Job summary

County Durham and Darlington NHS Foundation Trust is one of the largest integrated care providers in England, serving a population of around 600,000 people. We are a high performing organisation with a track record of success.

The department is recruiting to increase the clinical workforce, which is well supported by our advanced practitioner program and a large onsite histology laboratory. Our Cellular Pathology department has a fixed term vacancy for an Specialist grade doctor in Histopathology for a 12 month period.

The appointee will be based at the laboratory of the University Hospital of North Durham (UHND) where the Histology Department concentrates provision of the service (but supports other sites within the Trust, particularly at Darlington).

The post holder will hold or will be working towards the Certificate of Eligibility for Specialist Registration (CESR). As required, the post holder will be supported in their development and completion of CESR. Supervision and training will be provided as needed; however a high level of autonomous and independent dissection and reporting of histology slides will comprise the most significant part of their role.

Main duties of the job

The general Histology workload includes a wide range of biopsy types and resection specimens and post is for a general Pathologist at associate specialist grade but there is support for specialised reporting in Skin, Breast and GI pathology aided by Digital pathology; all of our consultant grades are specialised/semi specialised. The digital pathology facility will also allow development of flexible and home based work.

The department has introduced Advanced Practitioners in dissection and BMS screening staff to support Consultant staff and the appointee will be involved in their training and development.

The post holder would be expected to work closely with consultants within the Trust, and with Advanced Practice BMS and other lab staff, promoting and maintaining the high quality of these services.

A workload management system is in place based on the recently published RCPath allocation scheme.

Whole-time 10 programmed activities. The basic contract is for 10 programmed activities. There will be an initial discussion with the post holder regarding their job plan, prior to commencement of the appointment.
