Job summary

An opportunity has arisen to join the Corporate Nursing Team as Deputy Associate Director of Nursing (Patient Safety)The post holder will be responsible for ensuring the effective and efficient use of allocated resources to provide the following services within their portfolio; Patient Safety Team, Cardiac Arrest Prevention Team, Acute Intervention Team, Phlebotomy Team, Acute Kidney Injury Specialist Nurse Service and support the Associate Director of Nursing with the Mortality and Learning from Deaths agenda. They will work to provide comprehensive and robust professional leadership, guidance, advice support to their teams and across the wider organisation in matters relating to; patient safety, resuscitation, the deteriorating patient and lead on, and develop, the ward and department assurance audit process

Main duties of the job

This is an exciting leadership role with a diverse range of teams. The work is complex and varied and no two days are the same. There is scope for the postholder to further develop the role to enhance patient safety across the Organisation.

We provide hospital services from two acute sites - Darlington Memorial Hospital and University Hospital of North Durham. We have a centre for planned care in Bishop Auckland and provide care from community hospitals in Chester-le-Street, Shotley Bridge, Barnard Castle, Sedgefield and Weardale as well as over 80 other community based settings and providing care in patients' homes.

Job description

Job responsibilities

Accountable as the lead manager for the identified services managing all staff employed.

Be conversant with all Trust Human Resource policies and procedures and to be responsible for the recruitment process within the services managed

Ensure there are effective systems and process to identify service /staff training needs, with particular account of the requirements of the Knowledge and Skills Framework, and identify how to meet these, in conjunction with the training department

Responsible for implementation of corporate and mandatory training for all staff within the service, and ensure that appropriate monitoring and recording is undertaken.

Responsible for the yearly appraisal structure, process, delivery and monitoring within the services managed.

Act as an expert in areas relating to Resuscitation & the Deteriorating Patient.

Together with ADN Patient Safety and AMD Patient Safety and Governance oversee the implementation and embedding of PSIRF across the Organisation

Ensure systems to manage patient safety and clinical systems safety are robust

Provide strategic leadership to develop processes to ensure that the organisation learns from incidents.

Support the ADN with strategic insight and overview to matters relating to Mortality & Learning from Deaths regional and national policy.

To deputise for the ADN when required at regional and local mortality meetings to Mortality Committee.

To ensure any diagnostic groups of death flagged externally by e.g. Dr Foster, CQC or other external bodies are investigated.

Lead on and develop the Ward and Department Assurance audit process across the Organisation

Manage the Family Liaison Officers and all associated policy for the Trust To provide formal reports for the Trust Board in keeping with the agreed framework on Mortality, Patient Safety, Resuscitation or Deteriorating Patient matters.

Act as first investigator in performance and disciplinary matters

Undertake annual workforce planning for medical, nursing, AHP and other healthcare professionals

Ensuring the delivery of key HR initiatives/targets in their service using HR information to improve employment practice in the services managed e.g. sickness, return to work

Regularly produce statistical reports on such areas as performance

Analyse information on a range of areas such as workforce metrics and performance of services against KPIs and identify areas for improvement and develop and implement appropriate plans

Responsible for the development and implementation of policies and procedures as necessary in accordance with service development needs and Trust Operational and Business strategies.
