Job summary

This is an exciting oportunity to contribute to the continued success of a busy Payroll and Pension Team. We are seeking a proactive, enthusiastic individual to supervise a team of 17 staff responsible for the pay and pension records of approximately 9000 monthly and 666 weekly employees.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will ensure the Team are fully trained and have the adequate skills and equiptment to perform their duties. They will be expected to investigate, support and advise on complex issues. They will also monitor and oversee the full payroll processes and lead on interpretation of statutory and local regulations, NHS Employers guidance and NHS Pension regulations.

We provide hospital services from two acute sites - Darlington Memorial Hospital and University Hospital of North Durham. We have a centre for planned care in Bishop Auckland and provide care from community hospitals in Chester-le-Street, Shotley Bridge, Barnard Castle, Sedgefield and Weardale as well as over 80 other community based settings and providing care in patients' homes.

  • Significant experience with NHS Payroll Department including processing the payroll, reporting statutory and voluntary deductions and indepth knowledge of ESR best practice
  • Experience of reporting statory deductions to HMRC, NHS Pensions and Local Alternative Pensions bodies

Desirable

  • Previous experience of supervising staff

Qualifications

Essential

  • Qualified to Degree level/NVQ Level 5 or have achieved the suitable alternative knowledge gained through broad experience
  • In depth knowledge of and significant experience with Microsoft Office packages
  • Able to demonstrate data analysis skills

Desirable

  • Evidence of continual personal development i.e regular updates in HMRC legislation and NHS Employer Terms and conditions

Special Skills and Knowledge

  • Good written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to communicate and work effectively with a wide range of people from different backgrounds
