Job summary
We're delighted to advertise this unique opportunity for a fixed
term post/secondment at Aycliffe Secure Unit, a council-run secure childrens
home in Newton Aycliffe, providing accommodation for up to 38 young people aged
10-18; of whom are sentenced or remanded by the Youth Custody Service, and 30
young people accommodated for their own or others safety under section 25 of
the Children Act.
Young people accommodated in Aycliffe come from all over the
UK, are all children looked after by the local authority, and are some of the
most vulnerable young people in our society. Many have experienced significant
trauma, including sexual and criminal exploitation, and as such, can present
with very complex health needs, including substance misuse, sexually
transmitted infections, poor mental health and self harm. Many have led chaotic
lives and have had poor experiences of caregiving, and therefore have not had
consistent access to universal services such as dental care and vaccinations,
or access to school and learning. All young people accommodated by Aycliffe are
at risk of abconsion which would place them or others in danger.
Main duties of the job
Within Aycliffe, there is a small and supportive physical
health team employed by CDDFT, consisting of 1 band 7 Lead nurse, 3 band 6
Sisters and a band 3 HCA. There are on site Mental Health and Drug &
Alcohol Teams who are closely integrated with the physical health team, as well
as sessional input from Occupational Therapy, Dentist, Speech & Language
Therapy and GPs. There is an on-site school that all young people attend.
Whilst young people are accommodated, there is a unique
opportunity for these teams to engage them in assessing and addressing unmet
needs, taking into account the young persons wishes. As a Sister in the
physical health team, you would be delivering sexual health screening and
immunisations, performing physical health assessments and contributing to care
plans, contributing to multiagency risk assessments, educating young people
around contraception and sexual health, smoking cessation, medicines management
and management of existing conditions, working alongside other teams and
agencies with a holistic approach to care.
