Job summary

The Dermatology service at CDDFT is looking for two consultant dermatologists to join the team. The available posts are 1 x Full Time (10 PA's) and 1 x Part Time (7 PA's). There will be a discussion with the post holder regarding the job plan prior to commencement in post.

We are a department that welcomes doctors that wish to be part of a diverse and varied workforce and can offer a skills to complement our existing primary and secondary care practice as well as participate in the development of new services.

The post holder will be based primarily at the University Hospital of North Durham, although there will be a requirement to fulfil clinics at other Trust locations, such as Darlington Memorial Hospital, Bishop Auckland Hospital, and Sunderland Royal Hospital.

The department offers a full range of services including routine clinics, day case surgery, patch testing, phototherapy, dressings and nurse led clinics. The role will provide outpatient services, ambulatory skin surgery, and senior clinic leadership.

Job description

Job responsibilities

The post-holder will be expected to undertake clinical work in conjunction with his/her clinical colleagues and other professional staff in order to maintain and develop the dermatological service.

The main duties will be:-

The clinical commitment of the post is to provide dermatological services predominantly in Durham but also from other sites as part of the hub and spoke model alongside Consultant colleagues and supported by our junior staff. The post-holder will be expected to provide a comprehensive clinical service to consultant colleagues in clinical disciplines within the hospitals and to GPs to ensure a quality dermatology service to patients. This includes outpatient consultations, and specialist activities as agreed with other members of the department. Five clinical sessions per week are proposed, including a biopsy list. The consultant has a continuing responsibility for the care of patients in their charge and for the proper functioning of the department.

Clinic bookings rules will be in line with British Association of Dermatologists guidelines. Treatment of patients may be arranged in the inpatient or outpatient unit, and the consultant will be responsible for supervising this treatment.

Teaching - the post-holder will be expected to participate in:

a) Postgraduate medical education including hospital lunchtime meetings, departmental seminars and journal clubs, and the annual Regional Dermatology Clinical meeting.

b) The teaching of dermatology trainees and supervision of other junior medical staff in the department.

c) The teaching of undergraduates attached to SRH and UHND from the University of Newcastle Medical School / University of Durham.

d) The teaching of General Practitioners in the Skin Forum which meets in the evening three times annually.

e) The teaching of nursing, paramedical and other staff.

Administrative duties the post-holder will have continuing responsibility at all times for care of patients in their charge and for contributing to the smooth functioning of the Department of Dermatology. The post-holder will be expected to assist in the development of dermatological services via the Divisional Business Meeting and as required by the Specialty management.

Clinical audit both within the department and within the directorate should be a regular activity. It is expected that the appointee will actively participate, and contribute to the sub-regional audit group.

For the purposes of management and the use of resources, the post holder will be accountable to the Clinical Director of Surgery, and will ensure the effective and efficient use of resources allocated.

The post-holder will be responsible for the professional supervision and management of junior staff. They will be expected to fully participate in the CPD and CME timetable of the department which includes preparing presentations for our weekly learning point and CPD timetable on a rota basis. This supports the general learning of our department and our trainees.

Continuing Professional Development (CPD) the post-holder is responsible for ensuring that they meet the national requirements for CPD, both internal and external. The Trust supports the requirements for Continuing Medical Education as laid down by the Royal College of Physicians and is committed to providing time and financial support for these activities. There are regular academic meetings held monthly on Friday afternoons at the Royal Victoria Infirmary, Newcastle-upon-Tyne.

The post-holder will be expected to participate in clinical governance arrangements in line with the national and local guidelines. They will be expected to attend and participate in the skin cancer MDT if undertaking cancer related work.

The post-holder will deputise in the absence of colleagues in cases of annual leave, study and sick leave, for the care of priority cases.

If the Consultant is involved in the care of a patient who subsequently initiates a claim against the Trust, they will be expected to provide, free of charge, an opinion and statement of facts on the case.

All inventions, improvements, system developments, enhancements, designs, artistic and literary works made by the Consultant as part of the normal or assigned duties of employment belong to the Trust, and the Trust reserves complete freedom, in any circumstance, to decide what action (if any) should be taken in this regard

On call commitments

The post includes a commitment to being on call during working hours, with junior assistance, providing emergency appointments and also being responsible for the completion of tele-triage, choose and book triage and responding to Advice and Guidance requests. Part time clinicians are required to work fulltime during their on call week with additional PAs paid to equate to a fulltime clinician during the on call week

Each senior doctor partakes in a weekly Monday to Friday rota overseeing teletriage, advice and guidance requests and on call referrals (with their junior assisting colleagues). Current teletriage can be upto 250 cases per week. Routine Clinical activity for that week is cancelled for the oncall consultant.

Frequency of on call rota is 1:6.
