Job summary
We are looking for a capable and enthusiastic colleague to
join our Ophthalmologists at County Durham and Darlington NHS Foundation
Trust. The successful candidate will
replace a departing colleague to form a team of two full time Consultant
Vitreoretinal Surgeons in providing elective and emergency vitreoretinal
care.
10
Programmed Activities, 8.5 DCC and 1.5 SPA.
The basic contract is for 10 programmed activities; however
there will need to be a discussion with the post-holder regarding the final job
plan/on-call arrangements, prior to commencement of the appointment.
This post is subject to change in relation to site working
and may be impacted upon by future service transformation i.e. Better Health
Programme
The post will provide ophthalmic care for residents within
the catchment area of County Durham and Darlington Foundation Trust. The timetable will include clinical sessions
at 2 Hospitals Bishop Auckland General (BAH), and Darlington Memorial
Hospital (DMH); covering patients at , University Hospital of North Durham
(UHND); and participation on the regional vitreoretinal on-call rota.
Vitreoretinal surgery is delivered at BAH under
local anaesthetic, with general anaesthetic provision at DMH.

Main duties of the job
The
Ophthalmology department works across 3 sites providing Outpatient clinics in
Darlington Memorial hospital (DMH), the University Hospital of North Durham and
Bishop Auckland Hospital (BAH), with day case treatment being carried out
currently at DMH and BAH. This post will support the delivery of day case
services at DMH and BAH and outpatient services at UHND. The department
provides an Ophthalmology centre at Bishop Auckland Hospital with a one stop
service for patients that require laser treatment, lid or cataract surgery.

Job responsibilities
For management purposes and use of resources the post holder
will be accountable to the Clinical Lead of the Ophthalmology Directorate, and
will ensure the effective and efficient use of resources allocated.
The post holder will be expected to provide independent
expert opinion and management of
vitreoretinal, medical retina including diabetic retinopathy, uveitis
and screening of retinopathy of prematurity conditions in addition to general
ophthalmology delivered through session in the Eye Urgent Care Clinic - in
conjunction with regional colleagues when necessary.
The post holder will be supported to work towards CESR.
The post holder will be responsible for the professional and
educational supervision of junior staff and nursing staff in the urgent care
service.
The post holder will be expected to participate in the
postgraduate teaching of medical staff and undergraduates attached to the Trust
and in the training of all grades of staff.
Research activities, which are considered to be an inherent
part of normal clinical duties, will be encouraged and limited research
funding, may be available following successful applications to the local
Research and Development Committee.
Continuing Professional Development (CPD) the post holder
is responsible for ensuring that he/she meets the national requirements for
CPD, both internal and external.Andwill be expected to attend regularly and contribute to the weekly half-day educational
session held regionally.
The post holder will be expected to participate in clinical
governance including audit arrangements in line with national and local
guidelines and in respect of Undergraduate and postgraduate teaching in the
Trust in accordance with current best practice.
If the post holder is involved in the care of a patient who
subsequently initiates a claim against the Trust they will be expected to
provide, free of a charge, an opinion and statement of facts on the case.
The post holder will be expected to deputise in the absence
of colleagues in cases of annual leave, study leave and sickness as far as is
practicable and ensure continuous patient care.

Ophthalmology regional out of hours service rota currently 1 in 6
weekends. The vitreoretinal surgery rota
is separate to the general on-call rota and is non-resident.
This post is eligible for the appropriate
availability supplement payment and attracts an additional payment for
unexpected DCC, to be confirmed on commencement.
