Job summary

We have an exciting opportunity for a Graduate or Band 6 Dietitian to join our Paediatric team. We welcome applicants from those expected to graduate in 2023 .

Main duties of the job

The Nutrition and Dietetic service is split into speciality teams; secondary care, bariatrics, primary care, adult and paediatric diabetes, home enteral feeding, and paediatrics. We have 8 Band 5 Dietitians, 32 Band 6 Dietitians and 9 Band 7 Dietitians. We are supported by Dietetic assistants and Central Administration.

Our service is based on four sites at Darlington Memorial Hospital, University Hospital North Durham, Bishop Auckland Hospital and Shotley Bridge Hospital.

This post is comprised of 0.6wte paediatric weight management and 0.4wte general paediatrics. This post will be based at Darlington Memorial Hospital but post holders will be required to work county wide.

We have a centre for planned care in Bishop Auckland and provide care from community hospitals in Chester-le-Street, Shotley Bridge, Barnard Castle, Sedgefield and Weardale as well as over 80 other community based settings and providing care in patients' homes.

Job responsibilities

The paediatric weight management service consists of Specialist Dietetics (this post), Clinical Psychologist and Paediatrician support. Children referred to this service have a BMI greater than 99.6th centile and are referred for specialist input following primary care intervention. The paediatric weight management service is secondary care outpatient clinic based and is a Trust wide service. There are regular joint appointments with the Clinical Psychologist as well as Dietitian only clinics. The general paediatric dietetic aspect of the role will comprise general clinics and ward work. Safeguarding is an integral role of the Specialist Paediatric Dietitian. Regular support and supervision regarding this is provided by the Trust Childrens Safeguarding team.

New graduates are very welcome to apply and take up this position as a training and development role, with responsibilities and role adjusted accordingly. Please note that the appointment will be made at Band 6 Annex 21 (which will be 75% of top of band 6 as per NHS Agenda for Change) or Band 6 dependent on qualifications and experience. If you are appointed under Annex 21 conditions, once you have successfully completed our 12 month competency based training programme you will progress to a permanent Band 6 grade. (The contract ends if an applicant does not successfully complete the required learning objectives within this time frame under the Annex 21 scheme).
