Job summary
The
role involved the provision of specialist nursing support for children and
young people (CYP) aged 0-17, and their families who have a diagnosis of epilepsy
or associated conditions, in outpatient, inpatient, day care and community
settings. The postholder will be a key point of contact for families between
clinic reviews, providing direct, high quality and individualised specialist
information, training, advice and support to the CYP and family, and those
involved in the child’s education, welfare and wellbeing. The role involves the
provision of a specialist paediatric nursing care within the paediatric
epilepsy and complex needs service and delivering excellent patient centred
care. The post holder will also deliver education and training to families,
wider support networks, residential and educational settings and other
professionals to ensure a safe environment for CYP with epilepsy, liaise with
the medical team and coordinate treatments, reviews and investigations and work
with other related specialities and promote compliance with clinical governance
and regulatory standards.
Main duties of the job
We’re looking for an enthusiastic and experienced children’s
nurse to join our team as a band 6 Children’s Epilepsy Nurse Specialist.
This post is part time, based at Darlington Memorial
Hospital, with a requirement to travel throughout the region, both to hospital
sites and patient’s homes.
This role will utilise specialist clinical skills to provide
assessment, advice, care and education to children and young people with
Epilepsy and their families, empowering them to manage their condition. You
will hold an individual caseload, and undertake nurse led clinics, working as
part of a multidisciplinary team to ensure a holistic approach to Epilepsy.
This role will require you to work independently in schools
and colleges to train staff in the care of the child or young person with
Epilepsy, as well as supporting the inpatient teams in developing skills in the
care of children with Epilepsy.

planning, implementation and evaluation of programmes of care for children and
young people, including the development of comprehensive care plans and
emergency seizure plans which aim to empower families and reduce avoidable
hospital admissions. The postholder will independently manage a caseload, which
will involve liaising with patients in relation to appointments and appropriate
investigations. As well as being an expert resource for children, young people
and their families, the post holder will provide advice, education and support
that is appropriately planned to meet each individual's needs empowering them
to manage their treatment, whilst also being an expert resource for the Trust
in the provision of paediatric epilepsy treatments and interventions.
The postholder will have a key role in relation to Service
development and lead in the development and quality assurance of patient
information relevant care pathways, policies, procedures protocols and
guidelines for the identified caseload supporting integrated care and joint
working with community colleagues.
Educational responsibilities include contributing to learning
programme development for all staff caring for children, so they have up to
date clinical skills knowledge and competence in the field of epilepsy and
seizure management, fostering environments conductive to learning and
developing teaching and learning strategies to support in empowering
professionals to support their casloads and also children and their families to
managing their own conditions effectively., enquiry, research and support the
identification of the training and development needs of nursing staff/learners
in the development.
The postholder will utilise research to support
and enhance nursing practice, whilst also initiating and leading in
improvement, audit and research studies relating to nursing and
multidisciplinary care, within the specialist area of practice and education,
presenting findings through governance events. There is a requirement to contribute
to regional and local audits to benchmark services and provide drivers for
service improvement and also support in the maintaince of the Service database,
including ensuring data entry, retrieval and analysis and provide activity
reports as requested.
