Job summary

The Trust is looking to attract high calibre individuals who can bring their weight of experience, professional expertise and credibility to the leadership of the Board, with the successful candidate taking up their post from 1st March 2023.

We are looking for someone who can: lead the Board in setting and directing the implementation of the Trusts strategy, in support of our local and regional healthcare systems; lead the Boards engagement with internal and external stakeholders, and forge highly effective relationships within the Board and between the Board and our Council of Governors. .

To make an effective contribution in this role, the successful candidate will need to be able to demonstrate strategic leadership qualities in addition to the temperament, ability and experience to work at board level and to understand and shape the direction of a large and complex undertaking. They will be skilled in developing highly effective, collaborative teams and relationships between those teams and the wider stakeholders they serve.

The successful candidate will also need to have the credibility to lead a unitary Board and to work collaboratively both within and beyond the Trust

Main duties of the job

The Chair is responsible for the effective leadership of the Board and the Council of Governors. They are pivotal in creating the conditions necessary for overall board and individual director effectiveness.

Central to the Chairs role are five key responsibilities:

Strategic: ensuring the Board sets the trusts long-term vision and strategic direction and holding the Chief Executive to account for achieving the trusts strategy;

People: creating the right tone at the top, encouraging diversity, change and innovation, and shaping an inclusive, compassionate, patient-centred culture for the organisation;

Professional acumen: leading the Board, both in terms of governance and in managing relationships internally and externally;

Outcomes focus: achieving the best sustainable outcomes for patients/ service users by encouraging continuous improvement, clinical excellence and value for money; and

Partnerships: building system partnerships and balancing organisational governance priorities with system collaboration; this role will become increasingly more important as local organisations move to delivering integrated care, prioritising population health.

We provide hospital services from two acute sites - Darlington Memorial Hospital and University Hospital of North Durham. We have a centre for planned care in Bishop Auckland and provide care from community hospitals in Chester-le-Street, Shotley Bridge, Barnard Castle, Sedgefield and Weardale as well as over 80 other community based settings and providing care in patients' homes.
