Consultant Orthotist & Professional Lead
The closing date is 23 June 2025
Job summary
We are looking to recruit an experienced, compassionate and innovative Orthotist with the skills, enthusiasm and vision to be the Clinical Lead Orthotist at Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (LTHTR).
This is a senior leadership position at our organisation and critical to service delivery. You must be an experienced leader who can demonstrate the ability to lead in a compassionate and forward-thinking way, in line with our trust values. You will provide professional leadership and be accountable for a team of seven orthotists, and one assistant practitioner, as well as support workers and administration and clerical staff, who work within the department.
The team provides inpatient and outpatient services for both the local central Lancashire population and regionally across Lancashire and South Cumbria who access tertiary services at LTHTR.
The Orthotists engage with a wide variety of MDT clinics, locally and regionally, in management of Talipes, Stroke, Diabetes and Adult Neurology enabling excellent access to quality Orthotics services.
The team cover many specialties including Medicine, Surgery, Orthopaedics, Diabetes, Vascular, Neurosurgery, Neurology, and Neurorehabilitation.
The department has a strong reputation for delivering high quality person-centred care and the caseload provides complex presentations, across all specialisms within the field of orthotics, delivered by a team of highly trained and motivated specialist clinicians.
Main duties of the job
The Clinical Lead/Consultant Orthotist is a combined leadership/clinical role. You will spend 75% of your time delivering specialist clinical care and 25% of your time engaged in the management and leadership elements of the role.
Your clinical speciality will be determined by your specialist skill set and previous experience. You will be competent in complex orthotic interventions across all specialisms provided, and have clear understanding of the interdependencies that exist between Orthotics and other clinical services.
You must be an autonomous expert and clinically focussed practitioner, capable of using transferrable knowledge and skills, to support staff with their clinical caseloads. You will work across professional and organisational boundaries to expand and develop the service.
The role is diverse, and no 2 days are the same. You will drive forward agendas in areas such as workforce, safety & quality, finance & performance and lead service transformation.
You will oversee the education and professional development for all Orthotists, ensuring they have opportunities to develop and progress. You will maintain the current strong links with the local HEIs to support delivery of education and training programmes for all trainees.
You will be responsible for the assurance of high standards of clinical governance and demonstrable best practice across Orthotics and within the wider SMRC clinical team, ensuring high quality outcomes for patients.
About us
Personal development is high on LTHTR's agendas for its senior leaders. There are 3 Health Academy's across the 2 sites and a dedicated organisation development (OD) team. They provide high quality in house leadership development programmes and many other useful courses. LTHTR is committed to visible AHP leadership and peer support is available from the other 9 AHP Professional leads/Heads of Services, who meet regularly and share learning.
It is an exciting time to join the Orthotics Department of SMRC and LTHTR; we continuously review the services we provide and are on an improvement journey. This provides a conveyor belt of opportunity for further innovation and for the new lead to define and deliver an exciting future for the department and its patients. This really is an outstanding opportunity to lead your profession in a large acute organisation, delivering specialist services to both local and regional populations.
The Orthotics Service of Lancashire Teaching Hospitals is situated at the Specialist Mobility Rehabilitation Centre in Preston Business Centre; however, services are delivered at several sites, including Chorley District Hospital, Royal Preston hospital and at other community and hospital locations.
If you feel ready to take on this opportunity, then we look forward to hearing from you. Please make contact for an informal discussion or email with any queries. We are more than happy to schedule a MS teams call or site visit for anyone interested.
