Liver cancer is the fastest-rising cause of cancer- related deaths in the UK. The most common form of primary liver cancer is hepatic cellular carcinoma ( HCC) accounting for 85% of all primary liver cancers.

The benefit of HCC US Surveillance is only realised with regular attendance.

Patients who are at risk of HCC come from a wide range of social and economic backgrounds, including those from undeserved communities.

Main duties of the job

The role would include the following, however this is not exhaustive, as this is a new and developing role in the team.

Some of the role would incorporate face to face patient contact, however there is a substantial element that would be computer/ admin based.

Attendance on the clinical van in the community supporting the lead hepatitis nurse to identify cirrhotic patients who will need HCC surveillance.

Performing venepuncture and dry blood spot tests.

Interaction and discussion with patients who may need support to attend 6 monthly ultrasound scans and blood tests, particularly recognizing those patients who come from undeserved communities.

Performing Fibroscan in the community as well as in hepatology clinics in the hospital to identify cirrhotic, at-risk patients.

Assisting the liver nurse with the monitoring of patients who are having hepatic cellular carcinoma surveillance.

Running a 2 - weekly report using PACS to identify patients who may need abdominal ultrasound scans for HCC surveillance.

Work closely with the liver nurse to identify any patients who are high risk and may need further imaging.

Keeping the liver surveillance databases up to date.

Qualifications & Education

Essential

  • oGCSE Maths & English grade C or above / Grade 4 - 9 OR Functional/Key skills level 2 numeracy and Functional/Key Skills level 2 literacy
  • oBNCS or NVQ / Internal Level 2 training programme

Desirable

  • oLevel 3 QCF diploma (Qualification Credit Framework) in healthcare / NVQ level 3

Knowledge & Experience

Essential

  • oPrevious experience of working in an acute health care or related setting
  • oUnderstanding of health and safety issues within healthcare
  • oUnderstanding of concept and application of confidentiality
  • oUnderstanding of the role of a band 3 senior HCA
