Job summary
We are inviting applications for a Consultant General and Colorectal Surgeon to join an established & cohesive GI team of 11 Colorectal and 11 Upper GI surgeons in a busy Teaching Hospital and Major Trauma Centre,looking after patients with the whole spectrum of colorectal disease.
We are looking for a suitably qualified individual seeking to extend their existing experience of colorectal surgical services in a dynamic and experienced department.
The post-holder will be required to work across Royal Preston Hospital and Chorley District General Hospital, taking a share of the elective/emergency work in the department.
This is a permanent post, available to commence April 2026. Previous experience in General Surgery is essential.
Main duties of the job
The post holder will:
- Conduct theatre lists, clinics and endoscopy sessions and participate in the ward care of colorectal and emergency surgery patients.
- Take an active role in the management of all colorectal diseases including pelvic floor disorders, colorectal cancer and inflammatory bowel disease, and form part of the team providing surgical support to the gastroenterology department.
- Take part in a 1 in 20 on call rota for general surgery, based at the Royal Preston Hospital site. The 20 GI surgeons will form the general surgical on call rota, working a consultant of the week system, with on call periods from Friday morning to Monday morning, and Monday to Friday on a different week. There is an additional 1:10 sub-specialty weekend ward cover rota which includes a daily ward round of patients under the care of the colorectal team and providing support to the on-call surgeon on colorectal emergencies.
- Take part in management of Major Trauma. LTHTR is a regional Major Trauma Centre. Supporting this is a consultant-led trauma team and the successful candidate will be part of this team during the day-time and provide out of hours support as required when on-call.

Lancashire Teaching Hospitals is a major acute trust in the North West. General Surgical services are currently delivered by a unified department across the Royal Preston and Chorley and South Ribble Hospital sites.
At Royal Preston Hospital, the General Surgery Department is based on three wards. Three of the fourteen theatres are dedicated to general surgery. There is a dedicated 24-hour Emergency Theatre and a separate Day Case Unit/Theatre and modern Endoscopy Suite.
At Chorley and South Ribble Hospital, there are two general surgical theatres with an integrated laparoscopic theatre and in-patient surgical beds, as well as full out-patient facilities and a radiology department providing CT, MR and interventional facilities.
