Job summary

An opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic and highly motivated individual to join a team of Medical Engineers in providing equipment management and technical support throughout the Trust and to other healthcare providers in the North West.

We are looking for someone who wants to further their medical engineering career in a management role, developing the day to day management of medical engineering workshops and engineers alongside the responsibilities of maintaining our ISO 9001:2015 quality management system.

You will have substantial experience of working in a large acute hospital medical engineering department supporting and maintaining medical equipment across many disciplines. Ideally you will have had some team leading experience and possess the drive to constantly improve the service we provide.

Joining a well-respected and leading NW trust, this high profile role demands blended skills in management and healthcare technology and the ability to develop staff and the service itself in new and existing pathways. The trusts 31,000 items of medical equipment are diverse and you will be responsible for the safe management of this wide range of complex medical equipment; working alongside other managers in a close knit team, ensuring safe operation, minimum downtime and maximum patient safety.

Main duties of the job

You will be responsible for the day-to-day operational management of the Medical Engineering workshop and Medical Device Library based at Royal Preston Hospital but will also have some Trust wide responsibilities including working as the department's quality manager. They will oversee and organise the day-to-day activities of the workshop as specified by the Medical Engineering Manager, ensuring that the work of engineers attains the high level of quality and safety.

A major part of the role will be managing the departments ISO 9001 accreditation ensuring all internal and external audits are managed. The post holder will ensure the departments KPI,S are achieved and maintained along with attending meetings and providing regular reports. This is a technical and managerial post and good communication skills are required.

You will liaise closely with all users of medical equipment within the Trust, with manufacturers and service vendors to assist in ensuring that the Trust receives the highest standard of service at the lowest cost. They will provide specialist expertise to clinical and management staff on the purchase and use of medical devices; participate on Trust working groups and represent the department in various meetings to provide specialist medical device knowledge gained through technical training and long practical experience.

Qualifications and Education

Essential

  • Degree in Electronic Engineering or equivalent in a relevant subject. A lower academic qualification may be considered if the person has substantial relevant experience
  • Certificates of training at appropriate Manufacturers' Training Courses.
  • Member of the Register of Clinical Technologists

Desirable

  • Membership of a professional institute
  • Certificate/Qualification in Quality Management

Knowledge and Experience

Essential

  • Significant technical experience of maintenance and repair of medical equipment; working within a medical engineering department.
  • Managerial experience of leading and motivating Medical Engineering Teams
  • Extensive knowledge and experience of Managing Medical Devices 2021, CE marking, British / European standards for medical equipment; MHRA incident reporting systems
  • Experience of managing and working within an ISO9001:2015 Quality System.
  • Sound knowledge of basic scientific, clinical, physiological, computing and Medical Engineering principles.
  • Significant experience of maintaining a wide range of medical equipment.
  • In depth specialist knowledge across many Medical Engineering fields gained through further training and experience
  • Knowledge of design, construction, use, maintenance and repair procedures of medical equipment
  • Experience in the Health and Safety aspects of repair and maintenance of medical equipment in a major hospital.
  • Comprehensive experience of record keeping on computer based systems.
  • A contributor to teamwork and experience of working in teams, sharing experience, tasks and responsibility.
