Job summary

As a Matron in Medicine no two days are the same! But every day provides a real opportunity to make a difference for our patients, colleagues and local community.

We are looking for a dynamic and innovative person to join the Medical Division at Lancashire Teaching Hospital. Working mainly on the Preston site but with the expectation of covering at Chorley as needed.

Under the guidance of the Divisional Nurse Director and Deputy you will contribute to delivering the managerial and professional support on a day to day basis to all nursing staff, to ensure the smooth running of the wards and departments, to achieve both excellent clinical care, whilst also supporting the delivery of key national performance metrics. You will need to possess the ability to work as a key decision maker alongside the multi professional team, ensuring the safe implementation of nursing strategy within the department, in accordance with research, policy, national standards and the NMC Code.

Main duties of the job

In the role of Matron, you will work closely with the Speciality Business Manager and Clinical Director on all aspects of clinical care and be focused on patient safety, patient experience and quality assurance frameworks.

You must be able to demonstrate a compassionate approach to the care of patients and the public, whilst also possessing the ability to ensure robust clinical operational demands are met while the multi professional team are fully supported in achieving their duties.

A proven track record in leadership within Medicine is essential, as are excellent interpersonal communication and organisational skills.

To provide professional leadership, guidance, development and support for nurses and care staff ensuring the provision of excellent care with compassion. Monitor and improve the efficient and effective management of resources and the care environment so that services and staff are organised to meet the needs of the patient by providing a consistently excellent quality of care.

To ensure the provision of excellent care with compassion the Modern Matron is responsible for:

  • ensuring that the nursing and care support teams within their wards, departments and services are appropriately resourced and organised for the maximum benefit of patients.
  • ensuring staff and services are adequately supported and developed to deliver excellent care with compassion in line with the Trusts Values, Nursing & Midwifery Professional Framework, The 6 Cs, Safety and Quality Strategy, Governance framework, CQC standards, NICE guidance, other strategic local and national plans and policies.
  • leading and developing staff by being a visible authoritative role model providing clinical and managerial leadership, support and direction, capitalising on research and development opportunities, supporting staff to reach their full potential
  • Ensure clinical services are developed and delivered in line with national policy, Trust priorities, available evidence and patient care needs.
  • Contributing to the delivery of the trust and directorate safety quality and clinical governance priorities and associated work programmes.
  • ensuring the productive operation of their areas through the monitoring and maintenance of the highest standards of clinical care that create safe, clean and organised services ( including implementation of the infection control policy and action plans) and by developing processes designed to increase the time nurses spend in therapeutic contact with patients
  • Take part in the site management rota providing leadership guidance and support for all staff across the trust in line with the site managers duties and responsibilities.
