This exciting role gives you the chance to play a large part in influencing the direction of the safe, effective patient focused X-ray services in our forward thinking department.
Main duties of the job
In X-ray (plain film), you will be responsible for providing excellent leadership for the fabulous staff and services in the X-ray departments at Royal Preston Hospital and Chorley hospital including theatre, the DEXA service and the symptomatic Mammography service at the Central Lancashire Breast Unit( CLBU) .
You will be ably supported by existing band 7 lead radiographer roles in each X-ray department and an experienced lead Band 7 Mammographer- to form a strong X-ray leadership team.
Along with the others in the senior team you will also lead on Radiology wide projects and deputise for the Professional lead at relevant meetings when necessary so you will get the chance to represent X-ray and Radiology and AHPs across the Trust , ICS and region.
Whilst we already have high quality patient focused X-ray services there are other developments we want to pursue and we'd be interested in you bringing your own ideas to this role and how it and the x-ray services could develop
About us
Lancashire Teaching Hospitals provides hospital services to 370,000 people in Preston and Chorley area as well as Specialist services- Major Trauma, Vascular, Oncology, Neurosciences, Plastics to 1.5million people across Lancs and South Cumbria.
At Preston there are plain film x-ray services located within the Xray department, the Major Trauma centre, fracture clinic and chest clinic, a large theatre service supporting Emergencies, Orthopaedics, Neurosurgery, Urology and Pain clinic and a mobile radiography service. The DEXA service is also currently located on the Preston site. At Chorley the services are located within the X-ray department apart from the CLBU and theatre support for Ortho, Neuro and Urology. We have digital equipment in all areas including digital mobile machines at both sites.

This post is one of 6 Principal Radiographer posts managing CT, MR, Intervention, X-ray, reporting and ultrasound services across our Preston and Chorley sites. You will work as part of the senior management team in Radiology together with the Professional Lead and the Specialty Business manager leading on delivering and developing our first class services to patients. You would also be part of our team working on the New Hospital Programme to build new hospital facilities in our local area- and the development of Community Diagnostic Hubs to facilitate community services further.
Duties will include, but not be limited to:
- Manage the specialist service in a safe, effective manner including management of personnel, facilities and the associated systems and processes.
- Be responsible for the delivery and co-ordination of care, through appropriate professional practice, delegation and supervision of duties carried out by all staff within the team.
- Set, monitor and maintain standards of care to improve the patient experience and outcome of care.
- Pro -actively manage risk and be responsible for taking the lead in risk management and governance in the specialist areas. Maintain patient safety, conforming to health, safety and security legislation, policies, procedures and guidelines
- Ensure the work area complies with the requirements of Radiation regulations- IRR17 and IRMER 17 and related departmental protocols and procedures.
- Ensure research based practice is undertaken in department.
- To ensure systems are in place for the development, education and training of staff and students to meet changing service needs
- Manage and monitor the budget for the specialist area as authorised signatory.
