Job summary

Applications are invited for a substantive post within Lancashire Teaching Hospitals Trust. Candidates must have full General Medical Council (GMC) registration and be on the Specialist Register of the GMC under Intensive Care Medicine. The post will be to commence as soon as possible.

The successful candidates will join an enthusiastic team of 18 Critical Care Consultants, 12 Trainees and 21 Middle Grade Doctors in delivering Critical Care services across both The Royal Preston and Chorley Hospital sites. The Critical Care unit currently has recently completed a multi-million pound upgrade and expansion to 34 state-of-the-art beds on the RPH site, with additional Covid surge beds opened as required. Our Covid response was praised as a positive outlier in the 2020 Getting it Right First Time report.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will:- Specifically adopt, in conjunction with colleagues, an active role in the planning, development and delivery of the critical care services for the Department. Participate in the critical care consultant on-call rota at the Royal Preston and Chorley and South Ribble Hospitals with additional cover during colleagues absence. Assume a continuous commitment for the care of patients, even if employed less than full-time and ensure, in consultation with colleagues, that adequate arrangements are made for leave and off duty periods. Promote high professional standards of clinical care for patients, both through direct patient care and by the maintenance of continuing professional development. Exercise the freedom to develop specialist elements of the services to reflect perceived priorities within available resources.

We work weekday and weekend block working patterns, with on-calls worked as a block once every 8 weeks. We have a mid-week handover incorporating Morbidity and Mortality and Rehabilitation MDT meetings.The Department is committed to teaching and research.

There are ample opportunities to take part in local and national research trials.

It is essential that the applicant be committed to his or her own continuing medical education and professional development.

The successful candidate will be expected to undergo annual Consultant appraisal and job-planning.

Clinical Responsibilities Undertake a Block Working Pattern on the Critical Care Unit Participate in the Consultant on-call duty rota. Undertake administrative duties involved with the care of his/her patients. Promote high professional standards of clinical care of patients and the health and safety of the critical care environment. Maintain continuing education and professional development at least to the requirements of their base Specialty College.
