Job summary
We are looking for an experienced Specialty Registrar to join our busy Colorectal Department. The successful candidate will work with the existing Colorectal Surgery team which is led by ten Consultant Surgeons.
The post holder would take part in a programme of theatre, clinic and ward based activities designed as far as possible to complement their interests. They would also participate in a 1:10 middle grade on call rota providing experience in a wider range of surgical emergencies including major trauma, the unit being the trauma centre for Lancashire and South Cumbria.
Main duties of the job
As the Colorectal Fellow you will provide a Colorectal and General Surgery service which will include:
- Supervising the clinical and teaching activities of junior trainees.
- Assessing all new patients and liaising regarding clinical care with the Consultant and other colleagues.
- Participating in clinical audit.
- Contributing to departmental administrative needs.
- Attending Multi-Disciplinary Team meetings.
- Contributing to clinical research.
The unit offers all aspects of Colorectal Surgery including both cancer and benign surgery. In addition to both laparoscopic and robotic colorectal surgery, the department offers TEMS, IBD, pelvic floor and complex pelvic surgery.
The applicant would also be encouraged to take a leading role in ward based care of patients under the guidance of the units consultants.
This will be fixed term initially for 6 months.

Royal Preston Hospital
The General Surgery Department is based on three wards. There is a surgical assessment supported by a dedicated nurse specialist. Two of the twelve Theatres are dedicated to general surgery. There is a dedicated 24-hour Emergency Theatre and a separate Day Case Unit/Theatre and modern Endoscopy Suite.
An excellent radiology department boasts 3 CT scanners, 2 MR scanners, a nuclear medicine department and interventional radiology. PET-CT available on-site. The colorectal and anal cancer multi-disciplinary meeting is held every Thursday afternoon and attended by core members of the Cancer Team (Surgeons, Radiologists, Endoscopists, Pathologist, Oncologists, Specialist Nurses and a MDT Co-ordinator).
Chorley Hospital
There are two general surgical theatres with an integrated laparoscopic theatre and in-patient surgical beds, as well as full out-patient facilities and a radiology department providing CT, MR and interventional facilities.
