Physical Health Nurse Practitioner

Job summary

We have a great opportunity for a Registered Mental Health or Registered General Nurse to join our service. This is an exciting new role within the Citywide Eating Disorder service.

The Physical Health team is newly developed, and we aim to offer physical health care reviews including physical observations, ECG and phlebotomy to our service users who present with high levels of physical risk due to the nature of the illness associated with Eating disorders, mainly being anorexia.

The Physical Health team will be a small team initially and aims to consist of x2 band 6 registered nurses , a GP with Special interest and x 2 band 4 Healthcare Assistants with support from The team Consultant.

The team will support the physical health needs, initially of service users across Salford, Bury and Wigan with plans to expand across the GM foot print as the service develops and becomes more established, this may require our staff to partake in a rotation across locations within Greater Manchester. Where there is a requirement to travel significantly further than the team base in Salford from home, travel time and expenses will be provided.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will provide and carry out ;

- Physical health observations such as BP, pulse, temperature, BM's, oxygen saturation levels, respiratory rate.

Weight and Height recording (with an understanding of healthy weight parameters and BMI.)

ECG recording

Blood tests.

Review and highlight any concerns about physical health to doctors in the team.

Using a protocol or act on advice from a team doctor to make a management plan whereneeded if physical health checks show abnormalities. Advice will be available from a doctor tosupport with this.

Providing information to patients about their physical health

Advice & support in managing long term medical conditions.

Potential basic wound care

Offer practical mental health support and have an awareness and understanding of eatingdisorders.

Responding to urgent requests where required particularly if there has been high risk factorsbrought to your attention and seek medical support where indicated.

Audit and review of the clinic in conjunction with the Operational manager.

Adhere to MEED guidelines (Medical Emergencies in Eating Disorders.) We are looking for an RMN/ RGN to facilitate physical health monitoring clinics and provide care to those who require intensive monitoring whilst under the service.

CLINICAL

1.0 Assist in the development and implementation of integrated care pathways, including appropriate service user referrals and models of care.

1.2 Participate in case supervision to monitor standards of service user care and documentation.

1.3 Give/receive regular clinical supervision as per Trust policy.

1.4 Ensure the clinical environment is conducive to promote service users health, safety and well-being, thereby preserving and respecting each service users personal dignity, privacy, religious and cultural beliefs.

MANAGERIAL

2.1 Deputise for the Clinical Team Manager as required

2.2 Undertake delegated responsibilities as agreed with Clinical Team Manager.

2.3 Support the formulation and implementation of clinical and operational practices, and procedures as appropriate.

2.4 Participate in the recruitment, selection and induction of new staff.

2.5 Participate in the Duty Rota according to current locality structures.

2.6 Assist in the management and co-ordination of all services delivered to the service user within the clinical area optimizing all available resources.

2.7 Support the implementation, monitoring and updating of an operational policy and philosophy for the clinical area.

2.8 Ensure the principles of Clinical Governance are incorporated in service delivery by maintaining a high quality service based on agreed clinical standards.

2.9 Ensure adherence and implementation of Effective physical health care.

2.10 Have a sound clinical knowledge and awareness of MEED guidelines , risk assessment under MEED guidelines and follow protocol and policy in adherence to clients individual risk.

2.11 Ensure that Trust policies and procedures are adhered to.

2.12 Assist in the development of local protocols to ensure a high standard of service delivery is achieved and maintained.

2.13 Support the process of staff participation in the formulation of new ideas/suggestions to improve service user care and service delivery.

2.16 Assist in the maintenance and updating of the units equipment inventories and service schedules. Ensure regular servicing, maintenance, repair or replacement as required adhering to Health & Safety, COSHH and Medical Devices Agency regulations.
