Job summary

To be responsible for providing professional and clinical leadership to the Speech and Language Therapy workforce across the Trust footprint contributing to the development of high-quality Speech and Language Therapy services.

To act as an expert resource, responsible for managing a caseload of highly complex patients, championing evidence-based practice in Speech and Language Therapy to achieve clinical excellence and ensure that the highest levels of clinical practice and professional standards are delivered.

To undertake research, and lead on the implementation of national guidance and policies, audit and training programmes.

Main duties of the job

To provide clinical and professional leadership to the Speech and Language Therapy workforce across the Trust and be professionally accountable for the planning and delivery of high-quality Speech and Language Therapy, ensuring the delivery of safe, effective and efficient person centred care.

Budget holder for Speech and Language Therapy resource.

Provide visible leadership, lead, and inspire the Speech and Language Therapy workforce within the Trust and act as role model ensuring that the Registered and Support Workforce within Speech and Language Therapy are empowered to participate in and influence decision making at all levels. To act as a clinical expert in complex cases and offer assistance in resolving complex clinical Speech and Language Therapy issues, alongside providing direct clinical care as a Registered Speech and Language Therapist. To undertake specific specialised Speech and Language Therapy assessment and intervention as appropriate, identifying Speech and Language Therapy goals as part of the overall care plan to deliver and implement person-centred individual and/or group interventions, evaluating treatment to measure progress and ensure clinical effectiveness as appropriate. To provide representation for Speech and Language Therapy and other Allied Health Professions in decision-making, raising awareness of the contribution of Speech and Language Therapy and promoting the role of Speech and Language Therapy within services and clinical teams.

  • To effectively examine and assess patients, identify their problems, and needs and ensure that patients' medical, cognitive, psychological, social, environmental, and cultural factors are taken into account including those with diverse or complex presentations/multi-pathologies.
  • To utilise examination and assessment findings to competently plan and carry out specialist programmes of treatment from a range of therapeutic options appropriate to each patient, using evidence-based practice.
  • To be able to relate findings of assessment to presenting disease/pathology/ impairment.
  • To set appropriate treatment aims and objectives in negotiation with the patient and/or carer.
  • To take responsibility for devising specialist programmes of care for other professionals to carry out and for ensuring they are carried out appropriately.
  • To monitor and evaluate programmes of care carried out by other professionals and carers.
  • To provide specialist advice to others regarding the management and care of patients with communication and/or swallowing impairment.
  • To monitor and review care plans against outcomes and adjust care plans to facilitate achievement of goals
  • To raise awareness of communication and swallowing impairments via health promotion initiatives, educational initiatives, and health fairs.
  • To counsel and advise patients and/or carers as required to ensure that they are fully aware of the aims and objectives of SLT intervention.
