Job summary

Bolton CAMHS is preparing to enter a phase of radical transformation and as part of that innovative plan, the service is looking to recruit a Specialty Doctor with a special interest and experience in research.

This post is designed to enhance the current Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services for children in Bolton in key areas of provision around Psychopharmacology, Neuro-developmental disorders, Paediatric Liaison, and Research respectively.

It is hoped the post will robustly connect Bolton Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services with the expanding research agenda in Child and Adolescent Mental Health in Greater Manchester Mental Health. It is the intention of Bolton CAMHS to continue to be a site dedicated to evidence-based practice, and more actively involved in enhancing the present evidence base as well as a service that provides good and innovative practice examples for the wider GM iThrive CAMHS community.

Bolton CAMHS are active participants within the Greater Manchester GM iThrive transformation initiative to develop mental health systems across the GM footprint that follow the iThrive model. Bolton is fortunate in that it has a well-developed collaborative of voluntary sector providers of emotional and mental health support for children and young people, through Bolton Together

Main duties of the job

To provide child and adolescent psychiatric care as required, in accordance with the service's objectives and specification, and in conjunction with CAMHS colleagues. Such care will be broadly divided between generic child and adolescent psychiatry cases and specialist roles in relation to children and young people.

To give child and adolescent psychiatric opinion and advice to colleagues from other disciplines within the CAMHS team.

Contribute specialist assessment and treatment skills, especially psychopharmacology, within the relevant overall departmental plans.

Contributing to liaison with Tier 4 services where young people have been referred for such specialist input.

To ensure safeguarding of all children and young people seen in or referred to the department, through collaboration and following Safeguarding protocols and procedures.

Domiciliary visits will be undertaken, and children will also be seen in residential, social care or educational establishments. Any such consultations will only be provided if deemed clinically appropriate by the supervising Consultant.

Job responsibilities

The postholder will contribute to the systems that provide urgent and emergency responses to young people presenting to the CAMH department and in assistance to colleagues in services outside the Bolton CAMH service who provide such services.

The current initial response to young people presenting in crisis known or not known to the service who present at the Accident and Emergency Department (A & E) is by the All-Age Mental Health Liaison Team (MHLT), a separate team provided by GMMH. There are occasions when the MHLT request liaison with Bolton CAMH and require joint assessments. The postholder will most likely be involved when psychiatric expertise, or there is a request for mental health act assessment.

Children and Young People in Crisis are supported presently by three further services, the Rapid Response Team (RRT) who provide 72-hour input and the Home Intensive Intervention Team (HIIT) who will provide home-based care for up to a 6-week period. In the case of young people aged 16 plus, they may also have care provided by the Adult Home-Based Treatment Team.

Within Bolton CAMH the emergency response is presently provided by the Single Point of Access (SPOA) & Risk Team, providing 1st On Call, 24-hour telephone check-ins post attendance at A & E and 7-day follow ups. This team provides input to the Paediatric Wards and the Accident & Emergency Department as well as arranging urgent assessments of children & young people referred from the community.
