Job summary
Are you keen to pursue a career in Clinical Psychology and looking to develop the skills and knowledge required for applying to the Doctorate in Clinical Psychology? An exciting opportunity has arisen for two fixed term Assistant Psychologist Internships to gain experience in clinical and research roles within Greater Manchester Mental Health services. The successful applicants will support the psychology service within Meadowbrook mental health unit and be involved in a ground-breaking project across Greater Manchester considering older people who experience eating disorders.
Data suggests that the ethnic diversity of undergraduate university psychology degree courses better reflects the ethnic diversity of the population in Greater Manchester (21.3%) as opposed to the Clinical Psychology workforce (9.6%).One reason is the experience required to gain entry to programmes like the Doctorate in Clinical Psychology. Many graduates find that they have no option but to take on unpaid placement experience and this has contributed to the disproportionate disadvantage for certain groups. As part of a collaboration with NHS England Education, Workforce and Training, we are offering two paid internship opportunities for ethnically diverse aspiring clinical psychologists who might otherwise be financially disadvantaged by volunteering schemes. These are time-limited internship opportunities of 1 year that intend to minimise and overcome that disadvantage.
Main duties of the job
The successful applicants will support the work of the Psychology service across the acute mental health wards and psychiatric intensive care unit at Meadowbrook unit. They will work under the supervision of a qualified Clinical Psychologist and with the operational support of Acute Care management. This will involve completing biopsychosocial assessments and psychological formulations with service users and staff members. They will co-facilitate psychologically informed groups along with colleagues from other professional groups. The successful applicants will be involved in service development, audit relating to the Psychology service. They will also work on the GMMH aspect of a Greater Manchester wide project scoping older people with eating disorders and their use of mental health services.
This split post of project work in older adult services alongside clinical inpatient work will allow skill development in project design and implementation as well as data analysis, report writing and dissemination, under the supervision of a Consultant Clinical Psychologist.
We are happy to consider and discuss flexible working arrangements. We would encourage interested candidates to contact us for informal discussion about the role.
