Job responsibilities

Clinical responsibilities To deliver the therapy according to the study treatment protocol to ensure a consistent approach is taken throughout the study.

To contribute to the developmental aspects of advancement of theory and clinical practice necessary for modification of the treatment manual.

To contribute to the supervision of the other trial therapists and to treatment fidelity, within the context of a group supervision setting.

To contribute to the implementation of research into clinical practice.

To participate in training and clinical supervision and accept overall guidance from the Principal Investigator to ensure the study is conducted in a consistent and effective manner.

To liaise effectively with the other Senior Trial Therapists and team members to ensure communication about all aspects of the study are maintained.

To keep and file detailed and accurate records to ensure the correct data, as required for the study, is collected and recorded. To adhere to high standards of data recording to ensure patient confidentiality is maintained.

To maintain links with appropriate personnel within the Trust to ensure there is twoway communication between the research team and Trust.

To undertake other appropriate duties as deemed necessary relevant to the position of Senior Trial Therapist in the study trial.

To provide advice to appropriate other staff, within their own clinical area in the settings in which the trials are delivered.

To be responsible for recording, monitoring and reporting on clinical and research work and communicating, in a skilled and sensitive manner, complex clinical information (including assessment, formulation, treatment plans and progress) to a variety of recipients (e.g. trial colleagues, participants, other professionals) orally, in writing and electronically.

To engage in regular clinical supervision with the trial team and contribute to the development of the research treatment protocol.

To undertake risk assessment and risk management for individual participant as appropriate.

To develop and maintain the highest professional standards of practice through active participation in internal and external CPD training and development programmes, in consultation with the Chief Investigator and the Research and Innovation Manager within the Trust.

Professional responsibilities Organise own day-to-day activities; plan and prioritise own clinical workload.

Manage own caseload and patterns of participant attendance in consultation with supervisors and line management.

Develop professional skills in research, service evaluation, outcome measures and audit to contribute to the development, evaluation and monitoring of the research teams operational policies and procedures.

To participate in writing papers for publication where appropriate to the role.

To be aware of national developments, attend national events and undertake any necessary and relevant training to keep up to date with research developments and related issues as required.

Comply with data management and quality assurance according to regulatory guidelines (ICH GCP and Data Protection Act 1998).

Comply with Trust and other relevant organisational policies concerning security, safety and patient confidentiality and to ensure that procedures are carried out with safe systems of work and current legislation

Assignment and Review of Work

Work load will be assigned by research project managers in collaboration with study Chief Investigators.

The post holders will be managed on a day-to-day basis by project Chief Investigators, and as appropriate senior members of staff within the organisations they are based within.

Clinical supervision will be provided by appropriate experts within the research team.

The post holder will work within the agreed protocols for the individual study and, as an employee of Greater Manchester Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust, will adhere to local policies, procedures and codes of practice.

Person Specification

Education/Qualifications

Essential

• Postgraduate / Doctorate level training in applied psychology (Clinical/ Forensic/ Counselling Psychology) as approved by the Health Care Professions Council (HCPC), and registered with HCPC as a Practitioner Psychologist or BABCP accreditation as a CBT therapist

Experience

Essential

• Experience of specialist psychological assessment, formulation and treatment of clients within adult mental health care settings
• Experience of working with a wide variety of client groups, across the whole life course presenting problems that reflect the full range of clinical severity including maintaining a high degree of professionalism in the face of highly emotive and distressing problems, verbal abuse and the threat of physical abuse
• Experience of providing cognitive-behavioural approaches to clients with severe mental health problems
• Experience of providing cognitive-behavioural approaches to clients at risk of suicide

Knowledge

Essential

• Shows evidence of knowledge and expertise into the issues of providing psychological therapy to patients with severe mental health problems at risk of suicide

Skills & Abilities

Essential

• Evidence of high level of general clinical skills
• Ability to work creatively, co-operatively, reliably and consistently both as an independent practitioner and in multi-disciplinary and team settings
• Ability to prepare and present research reports and presentations
• Shows insight and empathy for client group
