Job summary

An exciting position has arisen for a highly motivated and flexible psychologist to join our established team at the Rivendell Service at HMP New Hall.

The role will be varied and stimulating, offering excellent opportunities to develop skills in both clinical intervention and wider systemic working, which incorporates staff training, staff support and consultation. We actively encourage and fund training and development opportunities. You will be working with and supported by an experienced team of psychologists.

The Rivendell Service is a long-standing and well-established residential treatment unit which exists as part of the National Offender Personality Disorder (OPD) strategy, run in partnership with Greater Manchester Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust (GMMH) and HM Prison and Probation Service. GMMH therapeutic practitioners and HMPPS prison personnel work collaboratively and innovatively to create a therapeutic environment and to deliver bespoke interventions for up to 16 people in a dedicated wing in HMP New Hall, a prison for women. All residents present with complex risk and personality problems and stay at Rivdendell for up to two years to address the needs that have linked their personality problems to their offending.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be responsible for supporting and delivering the formulation-driven care for a small caseload of service-users. They will conduct detailed assessments of risk, develop traumainformed formulations and provide tailored therapeutic intervention. Therapeutic input will aim to help our service users to manage emotions, cope with interpersonal difficulties and may also incorporate specific trauma work.

Therapy will also focus on understanding personality difficulties linked to offending the with aim of reducing risk and re-offending. Clinical work will be both in individual and group format.

The postholder will be encouraged to utilise innovation and creativity to engage the service users in their clinical work. Skills and knowledge of DBT or other skills-based interventions would be advantageous, as would knowledge of female specific needs.

The successful candidate will be expected to work closely in collaboration with the unit prison officers, providing training, consultation to support our responsive and trauma informed approach. You will be expected to see your case load once a week for clinical sessions, while also delivering group sessions. In addition, you will offer weekly staff support group sessions to the prison officer team.

This is a permanent contract post for a qualified clinical or forensic psychologist at Band 7 level. This post is suitable for newly qualified applicants.
