Job summary

An exciting opportunity has become available for an Assistant Psychologist to join the Psychological Therapies Team within Specialist CAMHS.

We are looking to recruit an Assistant Psychologist to join the inpatient teams at Junction 17 and Gardener Unit. The successful candidate will work closely with our qualified Clinical Psychologists and Psychological Therapists (including Family Therapist and Creative Arts Therapists), as well as the wider Multi-Disciplinary Team. This is a varied role which will offer lots of opportunities for assessment, formulation, intervention, service evaluation and service development. We are looking for an organised, compassionate, and enthusiastic individual who is passionate about working with young people and their families/carers.

The post holder will act under the supervision of a Clinical Psychologist and will be given appropriate support to enable the successful performance of clinical and other duties.The post offers very relevant experience for future Clinical Psychology training and the department has good links with the Northwest Doctorate Training Courses.

Main duties of the job

The Assistant Psychologist will be an integral part of the service and will work under the supervision of a Senior/Principal Clinical Psychologist.

The role will include, but is not limited to, assisting qualified Clinical Psychologists with psychological assessment, formulation and intervention (both individual and group), and service evaluation. The post holder will be expected to create and manage departmental databases, develop new systems as required, analyse information and present results to the clinical team. The post holder will also be expected to assist the qualified Clinical Psychologists in the preparation, instigation and evaluation of a variety of clinical, teaching and research tasks.

Job responsibilities

Junction 17 (J17) is a specialist Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service (CAMHS) for young people aged 13 17 who require assessment and treatment for a range of complex mental health difficulties. The team at J17 provide a range of services within our double award-winning state-of-the-art inpatient unit.

Our team of CAMHS trained mental health professionals work with young people who are experiencing mental health difficulties such as psychosis, eating disorders and anxiety/ depression. The focus is on helping the young person understand their mental health issues and build coping skills, through a range of therapeutic interventions.

Gardener Unit provides care for young people who are experiencing mental health difficulties and present with a high level of risk of harm towards others. These will be young people who require assessment and/or treatment and/or rehabilitation, and who could not otherwise safely receive this in a non-secure hospital setting or custody setting. The service aims to maximise young peoples hope about their future, enabling them to develop safe independent living and promoting opportunities for positive achievement.

The Gardener Unit is one of a number of medium secure adolescent forensic units across the country providing highly specialised care in a secure environment. The unit contains ten beds and is for boys between the ages of 11 and 18 years.

  • Eligibility for graduate membership of the British Psychological Society (BPS)

  • Further postgraduate training in relevant areas of professional psychology, mental health practice and/or research design and analysis
