Job responsibilities
Leadership Lead and manage clinical and operational activities in relation to the delivery of the whole Trust portfolio of research. Act as deputy for the Head of the R&I Office in relation to research delivery activity and performance metrics; maintaining an overview of performance against external targets set by the funder and a national perspective on research delivery issues ensuring the smooth operation of the department. Provide expert advice to research delivery staff and the wider R&I community in terms of research delivery in clinical services ensuring optimal patient care Oversee allocation of resources to support research delivery across clinical services taking into account the requirements for delivery of clinical research to time and target and the importance of offering research to our GMMH communities in an equitable way. Display high level communication and relationship skills, being able to negotiate with senior and junior team members and motivate, reassure and lead teams in a positive way and manner and at all times. Be responsible for recruitment and retention of staff within designated area of responsibility Develop, implement and oversee research delivery procedures to ensure the smooth running of the team.Clinical and Risk Management Monitor incidents relating to research delivery, leading investigations where appropriate, monitoring themes and lessons learned, sharing learning across the service. Identify and implement an appropriate clinical competency framework for all clinical research delivery staff and other service user facing staff within R&I. Undertake all mandatory training and ensure that the R&I clinical workforce is up to date with mandatory training. Ensure the environment is suitable for patient care and research processes, recognising the importance of privacy, dignity and diversity. Demonstrate professional development and an in-depth knowledge of current clinical and research practice and encourage and ensure the development of others. Oversee the provision of specialised advice and information to service users and their carers/families with regard to participation in clinical research. Oversee the safe and accurate collection of clinical research data as required by the protocol through clinical supervision of the research team.
Research Quality & Governance To ensure the clinical research delivery workforce contributes to the efficient set up of all research studies taking place in the Trust including liaising with sponsors, clinical services and the R&I Office. To ensure that both all studies have necessary permissions (eg HRA approval, Clinical Trial Authorisation) and contracts (eg. with participating sites, sponsor, support services) in place before site initiation. This will include oversight of R-Peak (the local portfolio management system) tasks, to ensure they are fit for purpose and completed appropriately. To work and communicate effectively with internal departments and sub-contractors such as the pharmacy services, imaging providers, laboratories and the NIHR Manchester Clinical Research Facilities (CRF) to ensure study set-up processes are in place and good working relationships maintained. To ensure medical device documentation and site arrangements are compliant when provided by third parties for use in research studies and to ensure R&I staff using devices are appropriately trained. To work with Greater Manchester Clinical Research Network to provide timely information with regard to initiation of NIHR portfolio studies and highlight problematic issues. To work with R&I Finance team and research delivery staff to ensure that all studies which receive activity based funding are on target and that invoicing is initiated in a timely way. To contribute to the development and review of R&I Standard Operating Procedures as both a lead and in an advisory capacity. Involvement in research governance structures within the Trust; attendance and contribution to the R&I Committee and appropriate sub-committees.
Financial Management Responsible for ensuring there is a process for recovering research costs for all projects with activity based funding. To identify and participate in any cost improvement measures required. To act as budget holder for multiple R&I accounts including commercial research funding, excess treatment costs and projects with activity-based funding.
Human Resource Management Oversee and provide effective leadership of the research delivery function including both line management and clinical supervision. Provide line management for research delivery posts leading effective recruitment, undertaking performance review and objective setting ensuring training needs are linked to service requirements. Oversee recruitment process for all new starters within the R&I department including ensuring funding, space, equipment and appropriate line management is in place and full R&I induction is completed. Oversee the trial therapist provision for the Trust.Education, Training & Development Keep abreast of new policies, legislation and guidance relating to research funding and governance and other related governance and risk management issues developed by the Trust, NHS, HRA and MHRA. Collaborate with the wider R&I team to produce the Trust R&I Training programme maintaining and developing a programme that reflects the needs of R&I staff and researchers. Deliver relevant Trustwide training relating to R&I including contributions to relevant Recovery Academy courses and Trustwide training on the GMMH Learning Hub. Ensure access to relevant clinical competency training for all service user facing staff in R&I.Information Establish and maintain tools to monitor research delivery performance across Care Groups sharing information with senior leadership teams. Utilise multiple sources of clinical trial performance data to inform appropriate allocation of resource to clinical services. To oversee the R&I data flows and information assets for research delivery functions map in order to ensure adherence to the Data Security and Protection toolkit.Communication Engage actively with Care Groups, the R&I team, research collaborators, support departments and external organisations to ensure awareness of research opportunities is optimised. Ensure all stakeholders are informed of changes (national, regional or local) in processes, regulation and guidance, communicating implementation of new Trust ways of working effectively across all clinical services. Provide Care Groups with the necessary information on clinical research opportunities in the Trust. This may include attending multidisciplinary meetings, developing website content and producing and maintaining other information materials. Answer queries relating to legislation and the conduct of research from clinical staff promptly and efficiently. Acknowledging all communication from clinical services and ensuring an efficient flow of information. Ensure there is good internal communication with all members of R&I infrastructure staff on changes, performance and issues.
Other As a senior member of R&I, be part of the R&I Operational Management Team and be involved in the development of R&I in terms of its work programmes and progress. Contribute to the running of R&I with respect to its activities in supporting clinical services, researchers and ensuring research governance compliance. To conduct any other duties as required by the Head of the R&I Office or the Associate Directors of R&I that are commensurate with the grade of the post. The post holder will be required to adapt to and undertake different or new duties in line with professional and service developments.
